The modem bird produces an average of 230- 240 eggs a year. Twenty five years ago it took seven pounds of feed to produce a dozen eggs. For example, the New York State researchers reported that hens layed significantly more eggs, if they’re put on an unusually low calorie diet for some time before they are ready for egg produc tion. Hie switch from the normal diet to a low energy diet at a given point during the rearing period results in 12-13 more eggs per hen. Better nutrition, thanks to research is improving the shell strength. Another Cornell study found that diets containing less phosphorus than normally recommended improves the shell strength of eggs.
