Ventilation is By DIETER KRIEG LANCASTER- Many hog diseases and health problems are directly related to the kind of en vironment the pigs are placed m, according to agricultural engineering specialists at Penn State University. Consequently, when a farmer puts his pigs in a house, he’s responsible for their environment. That means proper ventilation and temperature controls. Humid and excessively cold conditions are primary culprits in hog operations which aren’t adequately protected from the weather. According to specialists at Penn State, if a producer had his pigs laying on their bellies with feet curled under, or their hair was standing up, or pigs piled on top of each other, this past Winter, conditions were much too cold for them. There are two kinds of proper housing for pigs. “Cold” housing is recom mended for growing and finishing pigs, as well as brood sows. It provides natural ventilation under GAP AUCTION FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 13, 1977 5:30 P.M. - Located off Route 41 • Lancaster Avenue opposite Turkey Hill Minit Market - Cross RR Bridge. A mini-environment all to itself, this type of structure controls everything from temperature and moisture to , odors and ventilation. With energy costs soaring, it’s strongly recommended that insulation be figured into initial building plans. “Design your budding for good insulation and air movement,” Penn State specialists urge. To give potential builders of hog bams an idea of what to aim for, Penn State ag engineers suggest “R” values of 12 for walls and 22 for ceilings. The “R” value is a measure of the resistance to heat transfer, or insulation. To illustrate this value, engineers point out that a one inch board has an “R” value of one. It’s the same for an eight inch concrete block. Fiberglass insulation has an “R” value of better than three for each inch of thickness. Styrofoam has about the same value. one key to raising healthy pigs For urethane the “R” value is better than six. When installing insulation, it’s important to remember to always place moisture barriers on the warm side of the insulation. Also, all joints should be sealed to keep moisture out. Another important con sideration is air movement. A rule of thumb is one complete change of air per minute during the Summer, and one complete change every 10 to 12 minutes for Winter ventilation., The most critical part of the ventilation system is the inlet design and location, say Extension specialists at Penn State. These two criteria determine the distribution of air within the building. Inlets should jet air across the ceiling, the engineers point out. When ducts are in- Y wmcowsKi T] MACHINERY DISPERSAL Tues. Although the conventional pattern for fan placement in pig barns is along the sides, more and more fans are being located to draw air off of manure pits. Penn State recommends the latter. Odors are sometimes overlooked, since a man’s nose is about six feet above the floor, while most of the odors linger closer to the ground. Engineers urge hog producers to keep that in mind when deciding whether or not their production facilities are as odor free as they should be. The name of the game is minimizing stress factors for hogs in the building. The producer can give himself a bit of additional assurance Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 7,1977 — that he’s doing things right by checking temperature, drafts, humidity and odors within his hog facilities.
