—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 30. 1977 52 Tevoca By JOANNE SPAHR BROWNSTOWN, Pa. - What do you do when you have a vo-tech chapter that needs a name, but you don’t want to give it just any old name? You scramble the word “vo-tech”, add an extra syllable for a flourish, and you come up with “Tevoca”. At least that’s what the Future Farmers of America chapter at Brownstown Vo-Tech did, and they’ve used the results ever since. That chapter, comprised of juniors and seniors in terested in horticulture and floriculture from six schools around Lancaster County, held its annual awards banquet last Tuesday evening. J. Richard Wood, coor dinator for Brownstown Vo- Tech, noted that although many of the students from the chapter were not “farm bred” they have an interest in a form of agriculture and, therefore, take part in the FFA. Since the chapter is comprised of both hor ticulture and floriculture students, two sets of awards were handed out during the devening. The two Star greenhands were: Millie Becker, Ephrata, a junior at Ephrata Area High School and chaplain of the morning classes, and William Alberte, Reinholds, a junior at Cocalico High School as Now is the season for artichokes NEWARK, Del. - April is the peak season for ar tichokes, says Extension food and nutrition specialist Marguerite Krackhardt. They are often available year-round, but prices will be more moderate in season. Chose artichokes that are firm and fresh-looking, advises Ms. Krackhardt. A few brown spots on the leaves won’t matter. Wash them thoroughly and pull off any coarse outer leaves. Cook the artichokes in lightly-salted boiling water for 30 or 40 minutes, turning occasionally to assure uniform cooking. Add a little salad oil and lemon juice to the cooking water. They are done when a leaf pulls out easily. Drain upside down. CaN Your HUSKEE-BIU MAN! The floriculture star chapter farmer went to Charlene Miller, Ephrata K 3, a senior at Cocalico High School and president of the afternoon grc.p; and Darryl Weid man, Lititz, a junior at Warwick High School. - Darryl is also the morning group’s president. Both Darryl and Bill also took foundation awards for excelling in special areas of horticulture. Bill received the forestry proficiency award, and Darryl earned the ag sales and service honor for starting his own leathercraft business. In floriculture, the foun dation ornamental hor ticulture awards went to four young ladies. Normally, only two awards are given, but this year, the chapter members displayed such excellence that the amount was doubled. The four floriculture winners were: Felicia Gordner, a junior at Garden Spot High school from Narvon Rl; Caroline Becker, Lititz, a junior at Warwick High School; Colleen Nolt, East Earl R 2, a junior at Garden Spot High School, and Cathy Bowers, Lancaster, a junior at Manheim Township High School. Both a floriculture and horticulture student received the Lancaster Artichokes may be served hot or cold, with a sauce. Some people like lemon butter, but you may wish to try Hollandaise, sour cream, or mayonnaise. Provide each person with an in dividual dish of sauce. Tackle your artichoke one leaf at a time. Pull off a leaf, dip its fleshy base into the sauce, and scrape off the meaty part with your teeth. Eat only the meaty part and put aside the rest. The closer you get to the center of the artichoke, the meatier the leaves will be. Finally you’ll come to the core-like center called the choke. Cut it out carefully and don’t eat it. The choke is well-named. County I'.anker’s Award. Those students were Cindy Shreiner, Lititz Rl, for floriculture, and Frederick Christman, Lancaster, for horticulture. The county banker’s award goes to the outstanding senior in the chapter. Other Tevoca chapter members honored during the evening were: Kris Hanley, Kim Sanders, Patti Ream, James Slater, Judy Brenner, Cornelia Eden, Sherry Fritz, Tammy Eckert, Deb Richardson, Floretta Retallack, and Deb Finefrock. These students received greenhand degrees. Chapter farmer degrees went to Rowena Shumate, Diannalea Nolt, Tina Angle, and Linda Rodgers. o Coupon good for $2O off j3VC regular price of any John Deere Gas or Electric Gnll (TY2362, TY2363, TY2364, TYBBOO, TYBBOI, TYBBO2, TYBBOS, or TY8806) To Customer Please beadvised of following conditions (1) the cash value of coupon is 1 20th of 1 cent (2) coupon is void if use is prohibited or restricted by law (3) you will be required to pay ary sales tax applicable to the transaction in which you use coupon—such tax may be payable on full value of goods and (4) you must fill m your name and address in places provided below This coupon is being distributed by a John Deere Dealer who owns his own store and sets his own retail prices Price of merchandise offered on coupons subject to change without notice Further dealers may not have merchandise against which this coupon may be applied in stock at the time you present coupon However merchandise will ordinarily be available and can be ordered from John Deere by participating dealer Other items may not be available at all if sales exceed anticipated demand or other circumstances occur beyond dealer s and John Deere s control Use of coupon subject to availability of such merchan dise Limit one coupon per item Mr Dealer You areauthonzed to act as our agent (or redemption of this coupon in accordance with thetivms thereof Dealer must fill in name and account number Presentation for redemption without such compliance constitutes fraud This coupon and ad others you redeem for Spring 1977 Direct Mail Program are to be turned in to John Deere Territory Manager Offer expires May 31 1977 p fw I ’i Customer Name (Please Print) Address Town State Zip 5^3 '&S&M iis^^SsS& o Coupon good for $2 off OHVC regular price of one (1) ht John Deere Saw, Plane, or Hand Drill jjjj (TY3474, TY3475, TY3476, TY3481, TY3399, TY3445) ToCustomer Please be advised ©Hollowing conditions (1) the cash value of coupon is 1 20th oil cent Bm (2) coupon is void if use is prohibited or restricted by law (3) you will be required to pay any sales tax applicable to the transaction m which you use coupon—such tax may be payable on full value of goods and you must fill in your name and address in places provided below This coupon is being distributed by a John Deere Dealer who owns his own store and sets his own retail prices Price ot merchandise offered on coupons subiect to change without notice Further dealers may not have merchandise against which this coupon may be applied in stock at the time you present coupon However merchandise will ordinarily beavailable and can be ordered from John Deere by participating |K* dealer Other items may not be available at all if sales exceed anticipated demand or other circumstances occur beyond dealer s and John Deere s control Use of coupon subject to availability of such merchan |W disc Limit one coupon per item Mr Dealer Youareauthonzedtoactasouragentforredemptionof this coupon in accordance with theterms thereof Dealermusttillinnameandaccountnumber Presentation tor redemption without such compliance constitutes fraud This coupon and all others you redeem for Spring 1977 Direct Mail Program are to be turned tn to John Deere Territory Manager Offer expires May 31 1977 IllJv Customer Name (Please Print) »»> |l£jh Address fiS Town Stale Zip mi lie^eis^i assES?
