Adding grace and beauty to the stone bams are archways separating the barnyard areas and also acting as portals. This picture was taken from under the forebay. It was too heavy for a team of horses to pull much further than that. In a few rare instances, the bams were made of brick, but on the most part were made of stone. Brick bams are located mostly in the West Grove area. According to local historians, double deckers were built from before the Civil War to the early 1920’s when Jamesway bams were erected. The oldest datestone yet located was a 1796 marker, although other double deckers may be older but minus the datestone. F'rom all evidence, datestones on bams weren’t added until around the 1800’s while many homes in the area carry markers from 1710 and 1720. One other paint of in terest's that local historians believe the bams were built by Quakers, since they are all within driving distance of Quaker meeting houses.
