—Lancaster Farming. Saturday, Dec. 11, 1976 58 My Thoughts By JOANNE SPAHR Christmas means a lot of things to me, as it does to everyone When it approaches, I know my life will be packed full with family, friends, and most of all - love But, this year, un fortunately, two of my friends I grew to regard quite highly will not be a part of my Christmas celebration, and I must admit, I can feel their absence already I’m speaking of two people who, I’m finding out through my contact with many farm families in the area, were well-known and highly respected individuals - agriculture photographer Grant Heilman and his artist wife Barbara Whipple Before their recent move to Colorado, Grant had been my neigh bor for as long as my memory takes me back, and he was a man I held in high esteem for both his talent and his unpretentious manner. When I was young, 1 was in awe of his beautiful “house on the hill’ which was quite unusual for the area at the time. Later, as a teenager when I babysat for his son, I not only ap preciated the architecture of the house but also the beautiful works of art created in it by both Grant and Barbara Then, as I grew to career age, a few short talks and some words of PLYWOOD FEED BINS WAGON BEDS OUTSIDE CALF HUTCHES FEED AND SILAGE CARTS FARROWING CRATES STEEL AND WOODEN GATES BLOWER PIPE ANCHOR BOLTS PLYWOOD AND 2x4’s STOLTZFUS WOODWORK _ RD Gap, PA Box 183 1 Mile North Rt. 897 From Gap „ * 4 V Up y' MHyX: «• .w/iwg S'. guidance on his part partially led to my choice of a career in agriculture journalism, a niche where he had been so successful But, when they left for the West, I was so busy in my new job that I didn't get up to say a formal goodbye And, now I especially fell the loss since Christmas was when I had grown accustomed to having a visit with them For the past seyeral years he and Barbara had held a “Come and pick ■your Christmas tree" get-together for friends, neighbors, and relatives. It was quite an experience to share a conversation with a new, intriguing person over hot cider and cookies The fun of the afternoon wasn’t just picking out your Christmas tree for the season, bul rather, in visiting the Heilmans, enjoying their company, and meeting their friends. But, this year that custom will stop, and I won't miss the Christmas tree, but I will miss seeing Grant and Barbara So, for all the people who I’ve met m this area who expressed the same sentiments about them, I wish the Heilmans well in this holiday season and hope they are finding new friends and neighbors with which to share the joy of Christmas Bergland eyed for ag post WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep.
