She’s also the kind of woman who had the courage to give up her set, independent, single way of life as a head nurse to marry a farmer with five children from the ages of seven to 17 - and never turn back. And, t she’s the kind of woman, who ’through many of her own single-handed efforts, spearheaded the raising of $6OOO to be given to 4-H in her county. She’s Ethel Gross, Manchester, and to those who know her, she’s quite a lady. If you’ve been reading Lancaster Farming at all during the past few months, you are probably already familiar with her name and visage. She’s one of those women who can’t seem to help from doing newsworthy things. That was the time the York County Society of Farm Women gave $6OOO to the York 4-H center with a majority of that money earned through two raising projects chaired by Mrs. Gross. One of the fund raisers was a quilting project in which 12 quilts were-made and auc tioned off. Of the 12, two were constructed in the home of Mrs. Gross and in a large part by her hands. She also helped to sew a third. One hand-embroidered Bicentennial quilt which she made added $3OO to the $2210 quilt sale total. Of course, this nroject only took in about one-third of the amount given to the 4-H’ers. The rest was raised through the sale of York County Farm Women’s cookbooks which Mrs. Gross was responsible for compiling about three years ago. Just heading up the committee for putting together the cookbook would have been noteworthy enough in this particular instance, but Mrs. Gross did more than that. Actually, the money that was' given to 4-H was earned through an extra -r- ,y„ j „ ~ 1L'!1 ju ' *■ t printing of the cookbook, which she agreed to take full responsibility for if the money earned would go to 4- H. That meant housing 1500 cookbooks in her home, and ’ packaging and mailing -. or delivering - each order that came in. That’s a lot of books to package and mail out. She does admit, however, that after a while she learned to take shortcuts when she found out about packaged mailers that she could purchase all ready to go. How could a person be willing to compile a book when she had never dotae anything similar to it in her life? “Well,” she says, and then pauses for a fraction of a second while she figures herself out, “I like challenges, and I don’t have time to just sit around arid be entertained,” she states bluntly. And, then Before she says another thing, she stops [Continued on Page 63]
