After two days of mtensive practice prior to the con vention, the band performed during all but one session of the 49th National Convention of the Future Farmers of America this past week in Kansas City, Mo. Moll is a member of the Kutztown FFA Chapter, where his advisors are Donald W. Reinert and Ben Newcomer. Moll is now a freshman at Ursinus College where he plays in the band. Often referred to as the “mail order band” because of the method of recruiting members, the National FFA Band was first organized in 1947. Since that time com petition for the honor of playing in the band has steadily increased. FFA members who play in the band arrive in Kansas City two days before the convention starts so they can begin practicing. “Although we send band members the more difficult music ahead of time, it still takes a lot of practice to get ready for our first performance on Wednesday morning,” says Heath. “We spend six to eight hours Sunday af ternoon and evening prac ticing the music and working out marching formations,” he explains. “We also practice all Monday and Tuesday, and the rest of the week we keep in shape by short practice sessions and concert performances.” Although the FFA con vention officially ended Friday evening the band smen will not finish their week’s work until noon Saturday at the conclusion of the American Royal Parade. Traditionally, the FFA Band has been featured as the leading marching unit in the parade which signals the end of the National FFA Con vention and the opening of the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show.
