A 21-year-old beef and crop farmer, Anderson will ap pear at the opening session the evening of July 11, prior to three-days of educational programs tours and en tertainment. Sponsored by the American - International Junior Charolais Foun dation. t'-je program will feature ~ew dimensions m subject matter, stated Dr. J W Gossett, executive uce president of American- International Charolais Assn., parent organization to the junior group. The conference follows the first National Junior Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 22,1976 — Charolais heifer show to be held at the Nebraska State Fair Grounds on July 10. Judge for the show will be Dr. Miles McKee of Kansas State University. The show is being conducted in honor of Raymond Hicks, Bandera, Tex., CharolSis breeder and a long-time worker in junior Charolais activities. Assisting with arrangements and planning for the Lincoln events is the Nebraska Charolais Assn., an organization of Charolais breeders in that area. Live animals will be featured throughout the leadership conference as University of Nebraska professors and extension service personnel make their presentations. Dr. Keith Gilster NU extension livestock specialist will lead discussions on evaluation of slaughter steers, followed by inspection of carcasses from those animals the closing day. Participants also will evaluate Charolais breeding cattle, stressing the im portance of performance V s "' v,« (^Viv» < <* / > \ -'A s&S?® \¥- ' ■ testing. Dr. Gilster also will lead those discussions. Featured in the breeding cattle discussion will be a “keep and cull” class in which the junior breeders, using performance data and indexes, will actually select those replacement heifers which they would keep or cull. On the program’s second day, the group will visit the Meat Animal Research Center at Clay Center where they will hear research reports and view the center’s beef cattle herd and feedlots. The imal day will feature a discussion of carcass traits by Dr. Jim Wise, NU meats judging team coach, prior to viewing carcasses of slaughter steers previously placed on-hoof. Dr. Jim Gossey, extension livestock specialist for the university, will make a presentation on breeds of beef cattle, and Dave Williams, Nebraska 4- H Extension specialist, will make a steer judging slide presentation.
