He has served as president of the State Vo-Ag Teachers Association (1971-1972) and is presently a member of the youth livestock committee for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. A member of the Ephrata Jaycees, he presided over that organization during 1969-70 when it was rated as the most outstanding Jaycees chapter in Lancaster County. Beginning his farming enterprises as a young 4-H’er and FFA member, Zartman has continued to expand his business ever since. He farmed in partnership with his father until 1971 when he purchased the elder Zart man’s share. His goals have changed slightly during the past five years, however, in that he’s found more interest in dairying and custom com bining. Some of his management programs include a liquid manure system and all bunker forage storage set up. Zartman’s future goals include enlarging the dairy operation and custom combining business and - doing custom com drying. He also plans to switch from swine breeding to swine fattening and continue using the original barn for finishing out beef cattle. professional career to organizing field days to demonstrate farm machinery. He also cooperated with county Extension agents in initiating pasture renovation field days, dealing primarily with soil improvement practices on unproductive land. Through these efforts, about 5,000 acres of poorly managed pastures received renovation treatment. Home was well known by farm machinery manufacturers and farm equipment dealers for his ability to stage the annual Agricultural Progress Days and State Plowing Contest, one of the major events held m the East. The American Society of Agricultural Engineers awarded him numerous blue ribbons for his Extension publications, slide sets, and demonstration methods. He also was recipient of a Merit Certificate Award from the American Forage and Grassland Council and Pennsylvania Grassland Thomas Zartman, Ephrata Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer, gets things ready in the milk house for milking.
