Irwin LANCASTER - Jay W. Irwin, auoclate Lancaster County extension agent, had been named winner of the 1975 State Achievement Award presented by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. The award is presented annually to a member of Penn State University's Cooperative Extension Service staff with less than 10 years of service and who has demonstrated out standing ability to conduct innovative educational programs. Irwin will receive a cer tificate October 2 at the annual meeting of the national county agents association in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Holbcrt, Bedford County Extension Director and chairman of the Penn sylvania County agents association recognition and awards committee. The extension agent was cited for his work with Lancaster County poultry producers and processors. One of his major efforts was to reduce egg shell damage caused in poultry houses and processing plants. Irwin and extension specialists made farm visits to study handling procedures in laying houses. In addition, egg handling was observed in the area’s processing plants. The agent then set up a series of meetings for both producers and processors to review facts and recommend corrections. The Lancaster County Poultry Association recently recognized Irwin with an award for his dedicated and helpful efforts to assist the poultry industry. A native of Blair County, Irwin earned a bachelor of science degree from Penn State in 1949. A member of the Lan caster County Extension staff since 1967, he previously was employed by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Agway, Inc. The Lancaster agent was recipient of a Career Guidance Award presented by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and the Master Educator Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Farmer Cooperatives for his work with state and county youth programs. Sept. 27.197& King to speak in Schuylkill Haven The Annual Meeting Banquet of the Schuylkill County Extension Association will be held Thursday, October 9,1975, at the First United Church of Christ, Route 61, Schuylkill Haven starting at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Thomas B. King, Associate Director, Cooperative Extension Service, The Pennsylvania State University, will be the featured speaker. Dr. King will have as part of his talk, some special comments concerning the 4-H volunteer leaders and their role in working with the young people of Schuylkill County. A special part of the evening’s program will be the recognition of the 4-H leader. Another part of the Thomas B.
