Garden Spot Receives Equipment A Model 3000 tractor power train and 10-speed power shift transmission were presented today to Garden Spot High School by Ford Motor Company’s Tractor and Implement Operations - North America. "WE REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RECESSION" Obviously, all of us can be hurt badly by the recession if it is permitted to continue. When we say we refuse to participate in it, we mean that in conducting the operation of our business we will not go along with the "Nervous Nelly" ap proach, and cut advertising, sales help and purchases. We have, indeed, increased all three. “Recession" is nothing but a National state of mind. When people think things are going poorly, they squirrel their money away, don’t spend it, and things do get bad. If we can encourage others to act boldly and with confidence in our business, not only will we sell more equipment, but the slump will end. We can count on little from our politicians, but the spirit which made America great is still prevalant among the popie in general and American business in particular. If others will join us in our fight, our efforts can mushroom and we can beat this thing. cl oh " 1 Stauffer R.D.2, East Earl, Pa. Ph. 215-445-6175 '/. Herr, Honorary American Farmer. Honorary American Farmers arc selected an nually by the National Future Farmers of America for the highest honor the organization bestows to non members. Dr. Herr was one of 77 vo-ag instructors so honored in 1973 and invited to nominate a qualified school of his choice to receive an equipmient donation from Ford. The Ford power train, worth more than $8,600, will be used for instruction in the school's vocational shop courses. Donald A. Scheaffer, school principal, joined Dr. Herr in accepting the unit from John Watson, zone manager for Tractor and Implement Operations’ Eastern district office in Richmond, Va., and Allen H. Matz, president of Allen H. Matz, Inc., the New Holland Ford Tractor dealership. Mr. Matz noted the ser viceman of today is a highly teamed technician, and that the need for such qualified men has increased markedly. “Thus,” he said, “we are very pleased to assist in making this equipment available to Garden Spot High School.” Selection of Honorary American Farmers is based on a score card of achievement which includes years of service, the number of award-winning FFA members developed, number of members established in farming and agriculturally - related businesses, records of group . Soil Survey Conducted Soil technologists at The Pennsylvania State University have mapped the soil characteristics of more than 87 per cent of the state • 45 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties - in a project that has been under way since 1957. The major aim of the project is to characterize soils to be found in the state in terms of location and description, and physical, chemical, and mineralogical analyses. Interpretations are then drawn as to the suitability of the soil for different land uses. The project, directed by Dr. Roy P. Matelski, achievements posted by the local TEA chapter served as advisor, and community service accomplishments. A total of 219 Ford tractor power trains-worth more than $1,253,600- was donated to educational institutions in 1973, bringing the total donations of Ford tractor components since 1961 to 1,996, worth more than $8,744,000. The power train program is one of several Ford agricultural assistance programs carried on to further the knowledge and development of the industry. Others are the annual Ford Farm Efficiency Awards program, the Educational Equipment Leasing Program, and donations of the Ford Almanac to vocational evening classes attended by approximately 250,000 full-time commercial farmers. The State Department of En vironmental Resources recently awarded a grant of $123,250 to continue the project. Initial soil mapping of the entire state is expected to be completed by 1980. Work has already begun, however, on updating results and remaping areas covered m earlier surveys. According to Dr. Matelski, the survey is now used primarily by urban and suburban developers, as it is especially suited for engineering uses.
