Gerald Is hoping he will be able to show some of his stock at the area fairs this summer since he had no animals the correct agt to show last year. Raising feeder pigs is only one chore that goes along with the farm work, however, as Gerald also helps his father tend and harvest some 200 acres of com and 60 acrei of grain. Gorald’a father Is primarily in the beef fat tening enterprise and for ming although he does still raise pigs for market. Along with his work on the farm, Gerald also par ticipates in many of the FFA activities. A Junior at Manhelm Central High School, Gerald has served on numerous FFA committees and Is presently chairman of the leadership committee which is important to the general overall working of the FFA chapter, Gerald served the chapter as assistant treasurer and has been on the parliamentary procedure team. Gerald was also on the Dairy Judging team that traveled to Penn State for FFA days and has par ticipated on the softball, basketball and volleyball teams sponsored by Manheun FFA. Gerald explained that he appreciates the things he has learned in FFA and stated that livestock judging practice has been of much use to him. “From my experience and learning of livestock judging techniques, I’ve been more concious of good and bad points in animals.” “FFA makes you concious of many aspects of farming that would otherwise go unnoticed.” Along with his FFA woft, Gerald is also a member of the Erb’s Mennonite Church Youth Group and has served as the chairman of the fund raising committee for the organization. “Each year we raise sweet corn and have food sales to gain some income,” he explained. Gerald’s job has been not only to think of novel money making plans but to make sure they are carried out successfully. One of Gerald’s current projects is making a soil survey map of his Gerald is a busy young man who along with his regular school work has taken on much responsibility as a hog farmer. His success however is evident in that he has been elected to receive the young swine breeder’s award from the Lancaster County Swine Breeder’s Association.
