JOE RUDNICK. AUCTIONEER SALE at GALENA, MO. Saturday food production will be among key issues to be tackled by the Pennsylvania State Grange at its 102nd annual convention at Washington (Pa.) Oct. 28 31. “Fanners, like everyone else, have been hit by high living costs,” said A. Wayne Readinger, state Grange master. “They also have been hit by soaring prices for farm production supplies such as feed, fertilizer, seed, fuel and equipment. “On the other hand, the prices they receive for their products - such as potatoes, milk and meat animals - are far below production costs. The widening gap between in come and expense is discouraging many farmers and forcing some out of business.” As an example, he cited a Chester County farmer who recently sent 13 calves - the source of veal for consumers - to market. “He received a check for $72 for the lot,” Readinger said. “It averaged 15 cents or less a pound for the veal from those animals.” Among other key issues scheduled for action at the Grange convention will be: The proposed reorganization of railroads in the Northeast and its impact on What About Those Corn Cobs Lancaster Farming received a letter this week from a farmer in the Mt. Joy area who would like to know why the older farmers kept the com cobs after the com bad been removed for seed. He remembers that it was a practice to keep the cobs for a year before disposing of them. This farmer would ap preciate any information or ideas as to just what the cobs might have been used for or why they were kept for such a time. Please respond to Lancaster Farming. .
