And observing the occasion arc nearly 5.3 million 4-H boys and girls, some 560,000 volunteer adult leaders, plus countless others who support 4-H programs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Helping them observe 1974 National 4-H Week arc nearly 60 businesses, corpora tions and foundations that support the Cooperative Ex tension Service administered 4-H program through the Na tional 4-H Service Commit tee. In 1974, the National Committee has budgeted nearly million dollars to aid the national 4-H program. These funds educa tional aids and literature, in centives and recognition, leader training and numerous other services. In the area of incentives and recognition, corporate friends of 4-H help 4-H’ers “make it happen” by provid ing 265 educational scholar ships valued at $184,100. Many of these grants will be awarded during the 53rd National 4-H Congress in Chi cago, Dec. 1-5. A high percen tage of the 1,600 teens scheduled to participate in five days of seminars, tours, events and entertainment earn expense-paid trips given by friends of 4-H. Interac tion and communication be tween young people and adults are fostered through 4-H participation. Such dialog and cooperation contributes measurably to the molding and shaping of youthful lives and prepanng them for adult life. Many 4-H programs are particularly relevant in terms of concerns expressed by to day’s youths and adults alike. Among them bicycle safety is a fast growing and popular program among 4-H’ers. In the 4-H bicycle program, sponsored by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, youths learn how to safely operate and maintain their bikes and assume leadership roles with younger children. With increasing emphasis being placed on agricultural production, numerous 4-H projects contribute directly to much needed food sup plies.
