Saturday, April 20,1974 —19 Teenagers Want Help Teenagers want more help with personal problems and advice on education, vocations and social needs. These were some of the major findings of a com prehensive study of 900 teens recently completed by staff members of The Penn sylvania State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. Over 80 percent of the surveyed youth, 12 to 18 years of age, indicated great concern about friends, future plans, school grades, money and getting along with parents. Three-fourths of the teens questioned indicated a high degree of concern with boy-girl relationships and “planning my time.” “Interestingly, 80 percent of the teens studied indicated that they seek assistance from their friends con cerning their personal problems as compared to only half who seek help from their mothers and a third who sought such assistance from their fathers,” said Anne L. Heinsohn, 4-H Curriculum Specialist, Research and Evaluation, with the Cooperative Ex tension Service at Penn State. She served as project coordinator with project directors Dr. David Gottlieb, former Professor of Human Development at Penn State, now Professor of Sociology at the University of Houston; and Dr. Robert B. Lewis, 4-H Curriculum Specialist, Leadership Development. This survey, conducted in three counties in Penn sylvania of current, former and non-4-H members, revealed that the majority of those interviewed see 4-H in a positive light. The study, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Extension Service, seeks to learn more about the background fac tors, characteristics, and interests of youth associated with joining 4-H, remaining in 4-H into adolescence and dropping out of 4-H. The second part of the project, which will continue for two years, Is now un derway. The second phase will emphasize designing and testing teen programs in selected counties in Penn sylvania and Texas. A major conclusion from the study indicates that 4-H program offerings must be expanded to meet the needs of even more older youth.
