According to data from the 1969 Census of Agriculture, two-thirds of rented land was leased by part owners who operate land they own as well as the land they rent from others. The remainder was leased by full tenants. The report notes that about one-fifth of the land in farms of less than 100 acres was rented, but the proportion increased to around half for farms of 1,000 acres or more. Although rented land accounts for 2 out of every 5 acres of farmland, the share varies by region. Rented land accounts for about 1 out of 5 farmland acres in the Northeast and Appalachian States and for over 2 out of 5 acres in the Corn Belt, Northern and Southern Plains States, and parts of the Pacific and Mountain regions.
