Many factors in the bleak outlook can’t be changed. There’s a shortage of rail cars. Fertilizer production facilities, running now at peak capacity, can’t keep up with demand, and new plants aren’t expected to increase available supply much before 1975. Higher gram prices, especially for wheat, have created an explosive demand for fertilizer on fields that were once left unfertilized. And natural gas, a raw material in the manufacture of nitrogen fertilizer, is in short supply. Many experts are advising farmers to stock up and hold on to their fertilizer supplies because they might not be able to buy any when they most need it.
