Amos and his family moved from near New Holland to this farm bought by Ken’s grandfather Isaac Hershey in 1952. Amos bought the farm in 1958. Last year he bought a near by farm from the Jerome Rhoads estate. Their farm name is “Edgefield Farms”. They also rent 30 acres from Solanco School Board and farm a total of 290 acres They grow 130 acres of corn, 85 acres of soy beans, 40 acres of alfalfa and 35 acres of barley. They also do some custom mowing of hay for other farmers. Rutt’s keep 60 Registered Holstein cows, about 50 heifers and 30 bulls. They sell a number of the bulls at 12 or 13 months for herd sires. They still have four Ivanhoe animals left in their herd and 95 percent of their animals are related to Ivanhoe. They are in DHIA. Their oldest cow is 13 years old and produced 21,000 pounds of milk. Her twin, which was sold to a dairyman at Morgantown, was grand champion at the Pennsylvania Farm Show about 1965. Rutts have one full time em ployee, Harry Strawser, who lives on their other farm, and have a 15 year old cousin from Philadelphia helping this sum mer. Rutts operate a retail sales business of dairy equipment. They sell the Sputnick for a company in Canada. Amos worked with the company to build the Sputnick so it would be ap proved by Lower Merion Township for the Philadelphia markets. Rutt’s sell in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland and they are the sole distributor of parts in that area. They are also the sole distributor in the United States for the Bray Magnetic Cattle Breeding Calendar which is imported from England. This is an efficiency device and a time saver. They have five men selling for them. Rutts sell them door to door in their spare time. They sold 100 of them the first six months this year. They sell electric half-ton silage carts made in Churchtown, ventillatmg fans for barns, chicken houses and houses, also feeding equipment and some other equipment. Connie says her job is selling parts. Connie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Marlin Shaffer, who grew up on their Holstein dairy farm at Manheim RD2, was used to farm work. There were three girls and two boys in the family and all Connie does a lot of baking in her convenient modern kitchen. worked out on the farm. Besides dairying her father also raised tobacco. He is a trucker now. Connie graduated from Manheim Central High School. She mows the lawn, has a lot of beautiful flower annuals which she tends to, takes care of the vegetable garden, does a lot of freezing and canning, keeps the farm account books, pays bills, is an expert housekeeper and does a lot of sewing. Connie was in 4-H sewing seven years. She does her own and the children’s sewing. She has tailored some things, makes winter coats for herself and daughter, makes drapes and wedding gowns. She did do sewing for other people. She attends Farm Women county board meetings. She went to county and state conventions last year and is on the bazaar com mittee this year for the county convention. Their society, the newest of th 6 societies in the county, meets once a month in different homes. Some of the programs they’ve had recently were a safety program, demonstrations on the use of electric blender, candle making, ceramics, and pictures made of flowers. They have food stands at public sales to make money. They donated to the county project, the Welsh Mountain Clinic, this year. Their society had 10 of the members go to the (Continued On Page 57)
