—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 23, 1973 22 9 Twin Valley Members To Participate At FFA Week On Wednesday nine members of the Twin Valley FFA Chapter will travel to Penn State for the annual three-day Activities Week and Summer Convention of the Pennsylvania Association of the Future Farmers of America. This year over 1500 vo-ag students and FFA members from across Pennsylvania will par ticipate in this event as band or chorus members, officer can didates, official county delegates, or contestants ih one of the 17 contests. Larry Stoltzfus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stoltzfus, Elverson RDI, will be appearing for the second time with the 80-member State FFA Band. Stoltzfus plays a french hom. Terry Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Samuels, Honey Brook RD2, will par ticipate in the State Chorus for the second time. Approximately 60 members from throughout the state comprise the chorus. To be eligible for either band or chorus, an FFA member must secure the recommendation of his band or chorus teacher, his vo-ag instructor, and his local school administrators. They are: Douglas Yoder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Yoder, Elverson RD2; Robert Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Evans, Honey Brook RD3, and William Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Ford, Honey Brook. Dairy judges will be required to place seven classes of heifers or young cows on dairy type only. In addition, oral reasons are to be given on one class of animals. Three students will participate in the livestock judging contest. They are: Melvin Houck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Houck, Elverson RDI; Geoffrey Fultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Fultz, Birdsboro RD2, and Lloyd Simmers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Simmers, Honey Brook. They will be required to place one class of breeding cattle, one of market cattle, breeding sheep, market sheep, breeding swine and market swine. They will be required to place one class of five to 10 head of market swine ac cording to USDA market grades. On the way to Penn State the contestants will tour Heislers Cloverleaf Dairy at Tamaqua where they will see processing and bottling of milk and the manufacture of ice cream, will travel through part of the an thracite coal region of Schuylkill County where they will see for themselves the destructiveness of strip mining, and tour the Benner Springs Fish Hatchery of the Pennsylvania Fish Com mission. The students will be housed in University dormitories. They will have the opportunity to attend one of 10 educational tours ranging from hearing the h '' champion FFA Public Speakers and Parliamentary Procedure team to seeing the current research in cattle, crops, and deer management being con ducted at Penn State. Students will be able to talk with the heads of the various departments in the College of Agriculture con cerning future education and what Penn State has to offer them. USDA Frank Stoltzfus, State FFA vice-president, will leave Tuesday to help prepare for the Convention. The nine students leaving on Wednesday will be accompanied by Ronald Frederick, vo-ag teacher and FFA advisor at Twin Valley.
