Economist, PSU oidmatc their egg piocincment shell eggs might be packed m to maikel needs (Continued on Page 31) Marketing Today and Tomorrow How will eggs be maiketcd five or ten jeais fiom now 9 ” is an often asked question It also is one which has been subject to much speculation Yes. change will take place Current rumb lings ot the change, perhaps, will turn into reality tomorrow Marketing m general will change but it may not be too different fiom methods employ ed by some marketers today Some say. “One cannot pre dict what the future may bung ’ Perhaps this is tiue But, re member, all tiansactions are made foi the future Thus, it is necessary to have some concept of what may take place in the future if we aie to plan ahead Judgements and decisions are based on the decision makeis’ past experiences, knowledge and anticipated futuie develop ments Some of the changes will be brought about by changes tak ing place outside the industry while otheis will be influenced by changes taking place in the industry. Outside influences might be consumers’ attitudes toward eggs, competing foods, dietary changes, health factors, and transportation and retail ing systems. Marketing has undergone many changes in recent years Included among these are changes in egg handling techni ques, facilities, and organiza tion Each change appears to be aimed at increasing the effi ciency of marketing. But what is marketing’ We read and hear a lot of state ments such as, “The egg indus try must place more emphasis on marketing”, “The industiy must become market oriented”, or “The industry must begin marketing eggs” These appear to imply that the industry has not been maiketmg eggs If one were to ask several pei sons to give then mteipieta tions of maiketmg, he might get diffeient definitions of maiket ing fiom each These defini tions might range fiom simply pi emotion and adveitising to those encompassing all func tions of production and market ing But, marketing is much broader than adveitising and promotion These are, however, a part of maiketmg For discus sion purposes let’s consider the following definition of market ing Maiketmg consists of pro viding consumers with the right product in the right quantity, m the right sizes, m the right form; m the right place, m the right light; at the right time, and at the right price Marketing as defined above begins before eggs are produc ed It is necessary to plan pro duction to provide the market ing fnm with the quality, sizes, and quantity consumers demand at a specific price These are factors which might affect con sumer pieference The descrip tion of the light product may vary among producers market ing firms and/or distributors The right quantity seems to be the marketing aspect that is iiequently overlooked by many in the industry This is appar ent since there are periods of over aud under production in the United States Marketing should regulate quality and quantity of both total volume and volume of the vanous sizes of eggs that move to market Marketing can bog down if the movement of eggs from farms does not match the flow of eggs from the processing plant to the retailer or the consumer.
