Prior to being named to the Extension Seivice staff in 1947. the agionomist taught school in Jeffeison County and vvah em ployed as a soil conservationist for’the U S Soil Conseivation Seivice in Pennsylvania and West Vngima A specialist in the cultural r'anagement of small grains and potatoes, Pifer provided leadership in establishing ex tenshe small giain demonstra tion plots to promote farmer nse of newly recommended varieties. He also assisted in initiating contour strip ciop pmg piactices on hundreds of Pennsylvania farms. Pifer promoted and conduct ed summer small gram field days and annual seed conferen ces to supply current informa tion on small grains to seed growers and dealers He assist ed with annual training sessions with seed inspectors of the Pennsylvania Buieau of Plant Industry. Woiking with state potato growers, he established potato seed piece spacing demonstra tions which determined current seed spacing iccommendations Elmer C. Pifer Piter also introduced potato feitilizer demonstrations to show growers the value and ef fect of proper fertilization on yield and quality. In 1951, the agronomist set up a soil testing program for potato growers in the Commonwealth. Cuirently, about 1,000 potato soil samples are tested annually for lime and fertilizer recom mendations at the Penn State Soil Testing Laboratory. Maintaining a close working relationship with the state po tato growers organization, Pif er served as a program speaker at their annaul statewide meet ings He also supplied cultural recommendations to 4-H Chip Potato Club members during the past 12 years. He is author of numerous publications and articles on po tato and small grain manage ment Pifer is a member of the Ki wanis Club, American Society of Agronomy, Potato Associa tion of America, Pennsylvania Crop Impiovement Association, Pennsylvania Plant Food Edu cational Society. Epsilon Sigma Phi, national honorary Exten sion fraternity, and a life mem ber of Penn State Alumni As sociation. Her seived as chahman of the Potato Extension Piograms Committee of the Potato Asso ciation of America. In 1968 he was an educational member of the Pennsylvania Potato Pio duceis, Processors, and Distri butoi s Goodwill People -to - People Mission to Westein and Eastern Europe.
