University of Tennessee animal., scientists Smith, Mo orman, and McLaren, made this report of one result of an experiment to more than 2000 fellow scientists gather ed m Chicago, Nov. 25-26, 1960, for the 52nd annual meeting of the American So ciety of Animal Production. In the experiment, the per formanccs of straightbred Durocs, Hampshire, Poland, and Landrace, the crossbred litters were studied to com pare the productivity of the straightbreds with various two-, three-, and four-breed crosses among the straight breds. Records were made of lif ter size, weight per pig and weight per litter at birth, 56 days, 154 days and 180 days. In addition, daily gain fr om birth to market was used, as a basis of comparison. Pork backfat measurement was made at 200 ’ pound weight of each hog. Two- and three-breed crossbred sows farrowed 9% and 11% more pigs than the straightbred sows.
