Smith To Head Pa. 4-H Dr. William M. Smith, Jr. has been named state 4-H leader at the Pennsylvania State University, effective July 1. He succeeds Chaucey P. Long who retires June 30 with thirty-one years of service. ,Dr. H. R. Albrecht,, direct or of agricultural and home economics extension at the University, said Dr. Smith will be the fifth person, to fill the top 4-H position since this work was made a part of the Penn State exten sion program in 1915. He takes charge at a time of rapid growth and peak en rollment—44,o9o in 1958. After teaching at the Uni versities of Illinois and Ar kansas, Dr. Smith joined the Penn Staff in 1947 as a as sociate professor of family relations and was raised to full professor in 1950. He is an author and editor and widely known as a public speaker.^ A graduate of Ohio State University, he holds two de grees also from Cornell Uni versity. He studied at the Universities of Wisconsin and Chicago, and in 1954 - 55 spent a sabbatical leave in post-doctoral study at Mer nll-Palmer School in Detroit on a Grant Foundation Fel lowship. A fellow of the American Sociological Society, he is a member also of the Rural Sociological Society and the American Association o f Marriage Counselors. Later while operating bis own poultry farm there, he served as a 4-H local leader. Three years ago he received the National 4-H Alumni Award for Penn sylvania.
