ST 6-2235 More Chemicals to Be Used on Farms in Future Over the next few years there will probably be a lapid increase in the treatment of crops and farm land with agricultural chem icals, especially by air, according to scientists of the USDA’s Agn cultui al Research Service The in crease is expected to be mainly in the use of fertilizers, insecti cides, weed killers, and fungi cides The scientists cite the follow ing reasons for believing more and more use will be made of chemicals on the land (1) De velopment of new crop vaneties, many of which have proved at tractive to pects, (2) the discov ery of effective pesticidal chemi cals that can be applied in liquid lorm, (3) public demand for elim ination of crop and other losses due to pests, (4) discovery that laige crop losses in many areas, formerly charged to soil defi ciencies are actually due to nema todes or other pests, (5) im proved organic fertih/eis, (6) the invasion or spread of such pests as pink bollworm, Mediterranean fruitfly. witchweed, soybean cyst nematode, and otheis, and (7) the abundance of trained pilots and aircraft since World War 11.
