Page 8 The Lion’s Eye ~ March 28, 2012 Entertainment Meg's Movie RON I took little notice of 21 Jump Street; I have never seen the show it is based on, and the trailers made it look like just another dumb comedy. After it came out, however, I started hearing that it was actually really funny, so I de- cided to give it a chance. I went into the movie hopeful, but prepared for disappointment. 21 Jump Street exceeded my expectations from start to finish. 21 Jump Street follows two novice police officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum). Schmidt and Jen- ko became friends during their police academy training, de- spite having been at opposite ends of the popularity spectrum in high school; Jenko being a cool jock and Schmidt being a high-achieving dork. Upon their graduation at the police academy, Schmidt and Jenko prepare for “a life of being bad asses.” However, they quickly discover after being assigned “to park duty, that police work is not all car chases and gun fights. After a botched arrest, they are sent to 21 Jump Street, where they are given an undercover assignment. Schmidt and Jenko are enrolled as students at a local high school in order to bust a synthetic drug ring. The premise sounds ridiculous in an anti kind of way, but if you accept the film for the mainstream comedy that it is, the plot is perfect. 21 Jump Street manages to avoid many of the pitfalls and clichés of high school comedies. The clichés that are used are utilized consciously and affectionate- ly. Gross-out gags are kept to a minimum, and while 21 Jump 21 Jump Street By Megan Draper - Lion's Eye Staff Writer- msd5198@psu.edu Street certainly earns its R-rating, it is genuinely funny, and does not rely on shock-value Imghs, because it does not need them. 21 Jump Street feels far more authentic than most mainstream high school comedies. Schmidt and Jenko quickly realize that the cliques and groups they knew in high school have changed, and in my opinion, changed to more accurately reflect a suburban, middle class high school today. Being tolerant and conscientious are far more popular then they were when Schmidt and Jenko were in school. Another aspect of 21 Jump Street that is better than many comedies is that the main characters are likeable. Despite laughing at them, or perhaps because of it, the audience wants Jenko and Schmidt to succeed. The best part of 21 Jump Street, however, is how funny it is. Ido not frequently laugh-out-loud at movies, but I laughed at 21 Jump Street throughout the entire film. Photo Courtesy of google.com The only thing getting blown tonight is their cover.
