Through activities, conversation, and outreach events people of all ages create an environment that redefines outdated thinking about the mental illnesses. It also attempts to reduce the stigma associated with weight, body image, shape or size and wishes to inspire someone to reconsider any types of unhealthy at- titude or behavior. 2012 revolutionized some new ideas for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. This year’s main idea is about being more aware of what's truly important in life, letting others know about the disorders, inducing positive attitudes and chal- lenging others to think that way too. The new uplifting slogan challenges everyone to change their thinking from counting calories and counting limits or penalties each of us, to begin to “count what truly matters!” The initial motive is that instead of measuring our lives in the amount we exercise, calories we intake, pounds we gain or our possessions, we should instead choose to recognize improved behaviors and - healthier attitudes. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week here at Brandywine, the new counselor in Student Affairs, Ahyana King, held an event titled “America the Beautiful.” At this event, various insightful pamphlets such as “Some Do’s and Don'ts to Reaching Out to Someone Who May Have an Eating Disorder” proclaim appropriate actions to part take in when dealing with friends or family members that may have these illnesses. This was done to teach students about eating disorders so that others will know the signs when they see them. They may also suggest that the person seek professional help from a physician and/or therapist. Another use- ful handout Ahyana provided was a peculiar one called “Do I Respect My Body*” The pamphlet had an anonymous survey where students answered questions about how often they weigh themselves or how often they talk negatively about their own body. In addition to the meaningful discussion, Ahyana showed clips from the film America the Beautiful. America the Beautiful is an American documentary film directed by Darryl Roberts about self-image in the United States. America the Beautiful reveals the horrid truth behind our country’s unhealthy obsession with beauty. Before ever sit- ting down to watch the film, simply looking at the front cover reveals the wretched American values. It shows an image of the Statue of Liberty, a colossal American figure, having major plastic surgery implications. Upon seeing the film, you learn endless fats and statistics about how some young girls have greater fears of being “fat” than being diagnosed with cancer. Ahyana provided some statistics she had researched herself, which indicated that 50% of people being diagnosed with eating disorders fit the criteria for depres- sion. Ahyana gave this presentation honor of National Eating Awareness Week to inspire a balanced program for student at Brandywine and to “sincerely encourage people to be happy with who they are.” Ahyana chose to show America the Beautiful because she says “it did a great job in talking about all the issues with body image, age and culture.” In conclusion with her presentation Ahyana would love to see peo- ple striving to be healthier rather than “skinnier”, which is a notion that corresponds with the 2012 National Eating Disorder Awareness Week's slogan to “count what truly matters!” Link Up!
