Calvecchio likes to have fun on the field but knows when it’s time to buckle down and get the job done. The team is young and full of talent. Hav- ing 10 freshman on the team this year, the thought of having to rebuild the team is gone. As long as no one leaves, this team can only grow stronger. Having a few seniors that will be graduating this year, Coach Cal will have his work cut out for him trying to find replacements for these players who have helped build the program and are known faces around campus. Come out and support the team during their home games. The field is located at Penn State Brandywine’s campus to the right when pulling in from RT 352. The season is set to be underway March 11th against Swarthmore College at 3:00 PM. You can also make a whole day event supporting your school on the weekends when they play double headers. As a school, lets go out and support our teams in every sport we can and show how close we are at this campus. We can continue to do big things as make stronger pushes : The Penn State Brandywine baseball team took their talent to Florida for their spring training. Playing eight games in one week, the Li- ons went down with the hopes of coming together as a team. Having a few new faces on the team this year as expected every year, the team has to become one with each other in order for them to make a run at a championship that they have come so close to the last few years. Being led by Seniors Bobby Harper and DJ Gallo, the Lion’s are working hard in spring training to get ready for the regular season. The team had a little trouble in Florida coming home with a 3-5 record. The team and coaching staff got - to see how the team worked together with each other on and off the field. In order for the team to be successful in the up-coming season they need to act as a family. Under the coaching of Tom Calvecchio, who brings a 39-26 record with the Lion’s in his two years with the squad already is eager to begin his third year with the team. “Coach Cal” is also the one in charge of the pitching staff as well as. head coach. The team played a good game again, having four starters in double digit points, and an awesome perfor- mance off the bench from Amanda Congialdi with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Once again they found themselves down at the half by six points with a hard fight ahead of them. They outscored Fayette by four points in the second half but fell just short of winning the game. Fayette pulled out a nail-biter 77-75. Brandywine had the lead by four points with two minutes remaining, when Fayette came back and tied the game at 75. A jump shot by Fayette put them ahead by two points with only seconds remaining. The only goal that Brandywine could have had was to get the ball to a scorer and get two points and send the game into overtime. Knowing they were fighting hard, that’s all they needed to do to give themselves a chance. A shot fell just short of going in to send The Penn State Women’s Basketball team fought hard all year long to make it to the PSUAC championship game against top seeded Penn State Fayette. In order to get to this game they had to make it through some tough competition. Brandywine had to collect their heads and work together as a team in order to beat Penn State Beaver in the semi- finals game. Putting up a good fight during the first half, the Brandywine team only saw themselves at a six point deficit. Knowing they had to turn their game around and work hard, they pulled it together to score a huge 37 points in the second half to win the game by a landslide margin of 63-49. The efforts of senior Shari Harper, managing a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds helped the game to overtime and Brandywine lost the championship. Despite their efforts all season long they fell just short. They made the season interesting for themselves and the fans that supported the team the whole season. Now it is on to the next season and working hard to make another run at a championship for push Brandywine to victory. With four of the five starters ending up in double digit points also gave Brandywine the edge over the Beaver Lady Lions. With the victory against the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions, Brandywine moved into the championship game against Penn State Fayette. Ending the season just one game below .500 for the season, they cannot say that effort was the problem. Losing a few close games that may have ended them with a better record during the regular season, the team never gave up and always had the heart and drive to continue the season and go out and work hard every day. Even though this is expected from a group of college men on a sports team, the efforts needed to possibly make their season con- tinue was just out of reach from the Lion’s. The team lost their first three games they played this year, but they never put their heads down. They were able to dig deep into themselves and never give up. A lot of teams may have just thrown away their season after losing the first three games, but that just wouldn’t be a Penn State sports team if they did that. Known for our athletics and determination set forth by none other than Joe Paterno, the Lion’s fought hard all season, never showing that defeatist attitude that some teams may have shown if they were in the situation that the Lion’s were in just three short games into the season. The team struggles continued during their first ten games of the season dropping eight of the first ten games. The team knew that they had to dig deep and find the winning team within themselves if they wanted any chance at winning a champion- ship this year. The team fought hard and worked even harder for the next ten games finding a way to get themselves to an even record at 10 wins and 10 loses with just a few games remaining in the season. As the end of the season drew closer the team lost a few tough battles ending their regular season at 13-14. The bright side to the season was that they finished 11-7 against their conference rivals, but struggled to win games on their home court going just 4-6. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they are able to do so without losing play- ers. Having a relatively young team with four fresh- men and no seniors last year, the team is looking to keep a strong cohesive style for next year. Look to see big things coming from the men’s team as they hope to grow and mold as a team and chase that championship again next season. Go out and support your school by cheer- ing on the men’s basketball team next season as they hope to change their record to an above .500 team and work twice as hard to get themselves a championship and bring it back to Penn State Bran- dywine.
