Happy hunting! GODSMACK AND (0. ROCK CAMDEN RIVERFRONT By David Hoffer-Lion's Eye Sports Editor-DEH5081@psu.edu With the beginning of fall and winter just two months away, Godsmack, cur- rently on their Oracle tour with special guests Drowning Pool and Five Finger Death Punch, took the stage last Wednesday night (September 6th) to officially end the sum- mer rock concert season at the Susquehanna Bank Center. It was a chilly and damp night in the Philadelphia/Camden area last Wednes- day night, perfect for an indoor concert at the usually wide open Susquehanna Bank Center on the waterfront in Camden. The show kicked off around 7:30 with Drown- ing Pool opening the show. Playing a much abbreviated set, Drowning Pool played six songs which included two new songs from the current lineups two albums. Much to the delight of the crowd, they ended their set with fan favorites Tear Away and Bodies. Intermission followed, and unlike the usual run to the bathroom and grab as many beers as possible intermission I am so familiar with, this intermission saw tons of spectators grouping together to watch live updates on the Phillies game. It certainly was a cool sight. : Five Finger Death Punch was next. With the house now starting to fill up, FFDP brought out their loud and heavy sound. Alternating between their The Way of the Fist and War Is the Answer albums, FFDP belted out Burn it Down, Salvation, The Way of the Fist, Hard to See and No One Gets Left Behind. Their cover of Bad Company’s Bad Company exploded the crowd and got them the loudest reaction of the night. A funny moment saw FFDP bassist Matt Snell get loudly booed for wearing a Chicago Blackhawk jersey. Snell, a native of Chicago, took the abuse from the crowd and his band mates with a smile. Around 10 o’clock, an extended commercial for Godsmack’s lead singer Sully Erna’s debut solo album Avalon was shown. Following that ACDC’s For Those About to Rock was blasted right before Godsmack took the stage. Opening with their new hit Cryin’ Like a B*tch, they ignited the frenzied crowd. Up next was the opening track of their Faceless CD Straight Out of Line and first number one hit Awake. They then played four straight new songs from their 2010 release The Oracle which included their latest single Love-Hate-Sex-Pain. Voodoo and The Enemy followed before Sully finally wel- comed the crowd to the show. He asked for all of Philly and Camden to help sing a song off their first self-titled CD which turned out to be Keep Away. Ending their first set, Godsmack played Speak and their classic I Stand Alone. Godsmack returned on stage for an encore that started off with the song Seren- ity. Sully then had some fun with the crowd asking them about the Phillies game. “I hear the Phillies had a no hitter, am I getting the correct information or am I drunk and hearing things again?” The crowd went wild. A drum duel between Sully and drummer Shan- non Larkin, which included samples of Rush, ACDC and Black Sabbath, was next before the final song. Sully, not done interacting with the crowd, continued to pump them up. After announcing they are part of the Red Sox Nation, which was met with a very negative response, they proceed to explain they are like Philly in that they hate the Yankees. “We played New York last night and I told them I had a request: Can the Yan- kees please just die!” Godsmack then blasted out their fan favorite Whatever to close the show. Overall, it was a good show. Drowning Pool’s set was too short in my opinion and while Five Finger Death Punch had a quality set, the sound system was not up to par with the rest of the show. Many fans complained after the set they had trouble hear- ing the vocals. Godsmack gave a quality performance but I feel as though their set list was short and lacked the old school songs that made many listeners diehard Godsmack fans. Overall the say it was a C+ show and worth the price of admission. Legendary rock band Godsmack recently rocked the Camden riverfront with their haunting blend of heavy metal, acoustic rock, and alternative rock. (photo courtesy google.com)
