The Phillies become the first team in the NL to make it to back-to-back World Series since the Atlanta Braves did it in 1995 and in 1996. The Phillies became the fifth club to win back-to-back NL titles since 1969. The Phillies routed the LA Dodgers to clinch the NL with a 10-4 victory. Ryan Howard after the game was awarded the NLCS MVP award, which Cole Hamels won last year. Howard hit .333 with two homeruns, and eight RBI’s in the NLCS. Howard also tied a Major League record that Lou Gehrig held, with eight straight postseason games with an RBI. Howard wasn’t the only one on the team generating points. In the game 5 clincher Jayson Werth had two homeruns, Pedro Feliz had a solo shot, and Shane Victorino hit a two run bomb. The batting wasn’t the only problem for the Dodgers this series. Phillies pitchers dominated in all five games. Cliff Lee, who is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, was nearly perfect in his outing in the LCS. He had 10 strikeouts in his only game, giving up just 3 hits with no walks and no earned runs. Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton did their part to help the Phillies win this series and clinch another NL Championship title. World Series Champs is on everybody’s mind and the Phillies are going to stop at nothing to bring another title back to Philly, for themselves and for the fans._ High Hopes! Brandywine Plays Puck | By Dave Zelinski - Lion's Eye Staff Writer - dmz5009@psu.edu Anthony Carnesi handles the puck in a recent game Photo courtesy of photoubucket.com Although Brandywine’s ice hockey team may be coming off a slow early start to the 2009-10 college hockey season, the players and fans hold tremendous Penn State pride. The young team, backed by head coach Paul Gilligan and assistant coach Jeff Wild, consists of nine freshmen, 11 sophomores, four juniors and four seniors. Only 15 of the 28 players on the team’s roster are returning players from last season. The first few weeks of practice has given the relatively young team the chance to get used to playing in the lineup together. : Brandywine is back fons a tourna- ment in Pittsburgh, where they fell short of winning the two games they played. They travel to Albany to play in the ° SUNY Albany tournament from Novem- ber 6-8 and later host their own PSU Brandywine tournament from December 4-6. The team is coming off of highly suc- cessful season in which they traveled to Rochester, New York to compete for the National title, where they went head-to- head against other highly ranked teams from across the country. Although the season is far too young to judge a repeat performance, it is obvious that a talented team with superb coaching can go a long way. Tennis Team Finishes Another Successful Season By Karlo Radolovic- Lion 5 Eye Staff Writer - kar5165@psu.edu The varsity tennis team had a solid season this year, finishing with an even record with 5 wins and 5 losses. They had many impressive victories but also some matches that could have gone the other way. The head coach of the team, Re- becca Bergwall, was looking forward to a great season this year in her fourth season coaching varsity, and she got one. The season started poorly on Septem- ber 5th with a loss to Penn College. They lost the match 2-7. Despite losing the game, the team went back to the drawing board and came out to the next game and played Leigh Valley beating them 7-2. The varsity team would go on and win their next game, giving them a 2 game win streak, giving them momentum going into the game against Penn State York. Even though they had the thrust for victory, Brandywine wound up losing the home game to York. Brandywine faced York twice during the season, and lost both times. Other no- table opponents were Wilkes-Barre, which Brandywine split matches with 1-1. Hazelton were also worthy opponents, but Brandywine beat them both times they faced each other with a score of 6-3 in both outings. Overall this season was a success- ful one and showed promise for years to come. The coach and the players will take ~ some time off from this season, looking at the good and the bad, and then get back into it for next season. Brandywine is looking forward to an- other solid season from the varsily tennis team next fall. Under second year coach, Len Lomas, the team ended up with a 12-11 record. The girls really grew over the year and after a .500 start to the year, the really stepped up and finished the season on an impressive winning streak. The team posted victories in their last five matches over Bryn Athyn, Penn State Hazleton, Penn State Abington, Penn State York, Penn State Wilkes Barre, and Penn State Scranton. Three of these final five victories came away from home showing that this team has no fear, and will play any team, anywhere. Ending the season on such a high note can only spark promise and create excitement for the volleyball program as a whole. As students of this campus, we should look forward to a better season next year. With most of the team being freshman and sophomores, expected that most will return and lead the team next fall. Coach Lomas will undoubtedly be happy and feel a sense of pride with how his team finished strong and really bought into his message. Their determination and continued effort to practice and hone their skills was on display as the season came to a close. The future is bright for women’s volleyball at Penn State Brandywine and being a student and fan over the next few years will be exciting and entertaining.
