Page 2 The Lion’s Eye February 13, 2009 Eve on Campus Chinese New Year at PSU Brandywine By Sean O’Connor Lion’s Eye Staff Writer - smo5084@psu.edu On January 26, 2009, the world moved from the year of the Rat to the year of the Ox with the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The New Year rotates around the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Students on campus were able to experience a celebration of the New Year in the Tomeszko building during common hour. Those who attended had their pick from a variety of Asian cuisine and were presented with a performance by the Tai Yim Lion Dancers for entertainment. The artists presented several different dance forms they were studying, flowing smoothly from one move right into the next. The artists also put on a breathtaking sword display in which the blades flashed around the periornior S bodies, sometimes less than an inch from their skin. Fans in the crowd could also take part in one of the signature dances of the Chinese New Year, a dance in the suit of a Chinese lion. Students, Becca Ol- ley (senior) and David Daley (freshman), attempted “the dance” offering another degree of entertainment for the crowd of around 50. Students could work individually, in groups, or even as a class to research and display their work to the world. Thus, EURE- CA (Exhibition of Undergraduate Research Enterprise and Creative | Accomplishment) was created. EURECA is an event that is held in order to reveal the hard work students put into research under the supervision of Penn State faculty. In the past, EURECA has proved itself to be popular in that in 2005, over one hundred students par- ticipated in displaying group and individual projects. : EURECA is not an event where students display their work and are not compensated with prizes or money. It is a friendly atmosphere where students are able to display the scholarly work that they par- ticipated in with their advisors. Although participants over the years have displayed work in the field of Science, Business, HDFS (Hu- man Development and Family Studies), Education, and English, but it is open for all majors. Students that are interested in EURECA are advised to speak with their professors about displaying their projects. EURECA will be held on April 15, 2009 in the gymnasium. The deadline for submis- sions is April 2, 2009 and submissions will be handed in and looked over by faculty. So, for all those writers in training, start marking your calendars. 7 he — free Acapella singing group mm— on —— daniay 1 — during common hour in the Lions Den.
