Summer 2008 wr soa i wr SW RAE ENE A Me ga SE ne JR od GR Page 5 Candidates on the Issues: Reproductive Rights By Sarah Lane Contributing staff sjl5143@psu.edu The presidential race is in full swing, but the battle will not be over until Election Day on November 4, 2008. That’s why it is still important to be educated on the platforms of each candidate. Since the abortion-rights decision Roe vs. Wade, reproductive rights have been a major issue concerning the presidential candidates. This deci- sion overturned state and federal laws outlawing abortion up to the point at which the fetus could potentially live outside the womb (24-28 weeks). This was one the most controversial cases in U.S. Supreme Court history. There is still controversy surrounding reproductive rights, which is why it is important to know who the candidates are and where they stand on this issue. Here are the frontrunners in the race and their views on reproductive rights. John McCain (R): *Opposes partial birth abortions *Wants to restrict abortion; no public funding *Overturn Roe v. Wade, but keep incest & rape exceptions *Voted YES on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. (image courtesy of google.com.) Barack Obama (D): *Against banning partial birth abortion except for maternal life *Trusts women to make their own decisions on partial birth abortion *Protects a women’s right to choose *Supports Roe vs. Wade *Voted NO on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions Reproductive rights is not the only issue on the political platform. You can find all the issues and where each candidate stands on them at the website www.Ontheissues.org. Being an educated voter is important. *(D) indicates Democrat and (R) indicates Republican. * Lion’s Eye Editorial Board ~SUMMER ISSUE~ Editor-in-Chief Christina Felizzi Managing/Photo Editor Brittany Neimeth Lion’s Eye Adivsor Karrie Bowen Contributing staff: Sarah Lane Kionna Lipscomb Contact the Lion’s Eye: Christina - clf5050@psu.edu Karrie Bowen - kab44@psu.edu MISSION STATEMENT We are the newspaper of the Penn State Brandywine campus, serving the students, administration, faculty, staff, visitors of our campus and the local community. By Christina Felizzi Editor in Chief clf5050@psu.edu Some people are bestowed with endless determination. Those are our movers and shakers, the ones that get things done in this coun- try - they just do not give up the fight. Democrat Hilary Clinton could have dropped out of the presidential campaigning race a while ago. But what does she do? Clinton continues onward. The real question is, though, why was she almost forced out the run- ning? Not for her lack of presi- dential qualifications, but for her lack of money. Money. What it seems to always come down to. No matter how many times it has been said, and over-used, “money is the root of all evil,” still rings true, specifically in the 2008 presidential campaign. Remember candidates such as Republican Mike Hucka- bee? Yes, it seems so long ago since he was a part of the presi- dential campaign. Guess one of the reasons why he dropped out of the race...yes, money. Perhaps he was one of the more qualified candidates for the presi- dency, but too late now because poor Huckabee ran out of money, which is necessary to continue further in the campaign. Now Clinton is facing the same prob- lem, causing herself to go further into debt. On the other hand, for Democrat Barack Obama, money is not an issue, but how fair is that for other candidates? What if a candidate is perfectly eligible for the presidency but just does not have the finances to con- tinue campaigning? Last time I checked, we lived in a democratic nation, money shouldn’t prevent candidates from the oval office. I am sure everyone wants this presidential campaign People Poll with Brittany Neimeth What are your plans for the summer? BUT IT’S THE ROOT OF ALL UNFAIRNESS to be as fair as possible because that’s the way it should be, in which each candidate has the same opportunities and resources available to them in aiding them with their campaigning. It is not, unfortunately, but there is a solu- tion to this problem. If each candidate was given a set amount of money to use for campaigning, not out of their own pocket but provided by the government, then this would eliminate any issues associated with candidates dropping out because of financial troubles. I feel that is it as simple as that. Giving candidates the same amount of money to cam- paign with, but allowing them to use that money in whatever way they please, would make things equal. This situation with the presidential candidates reminds me of situations in the workforce. You will hear of companies lay- ing-off older, more experienced and qualified workers for younger employees whom they can em- ploy for less money. So, rather than having a company composed of seasoned employees, resulting in a better quality company, they have a company consisting of inexperienced employees getting paid less because they’re cheaper to employ. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t make sense to me. It’s all about money, money, money. Who knows if something like this flaw in the presidential campaigning process will be cor- rected, but all we can do is hope for a better future and endure the injustice of it all as it is. It is going to be a long time before we can leave out the word “corrupt” when describing our government, and even our world.
