However, while they're out with a "new" release, it actually seems just the opposite. Most of the songs on the album follow the same tone and chorus line, and the originality that was on their previous albums is lacking in this current album, "A Different Kind of Pain." The band has had their own rifts lately; Their record label showed them the front door, gui- tarists have been in and out, and lead vocalist Scooter Ward has had fiancé problems. "Year of the Spider" (2003) and "13 Ways to Bleed Onstage" (2000) showed more of Cold's unique edge, with a dash of dark and-gloom and an angle of creativity. Out of the album's 11 tracks, I only listened to Three. I skipped the others because they felt like the leftovers of other songs. It seemed as if Cold didn't try anything different this album or explore another angle, because practically every song carried the same overall tone and the lyrics were more insipid. In other albums, the words seemed more thought out, not droning on. I'd say if you're into bands such as Chevelle or Disturbed, give Cold a try. : Nevertheless, listen to some of their old albums first. Out of five paws, I'd give this album three and a half paws. — MICHELLE ROUCHE Movies: Wedding Crashers rp What an interesting concept-sneaking into social events to meet girls-no strings attached. Hey guys, your dreams have come true! Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn star together in one of the funniest movies coming from the summer. They make the perfect romantic comedy duo. Owen and Vince play two divorce mediators who are in search for “Ms. Right.” Owen Wilson's character falls for Rachael McAdams. Her dad is a rich politician played dryly by Christopher Walken. Vince Vaughn falls for Rachel McAdam's sis- ter, who 1s a bit of an airhead. Will everything work out for the wedding crashers at the end? You will have to see it for yourself to find out. I have to recommend this to anyone who loves a good laugh. This was one of the best comedies I have seen in a long time! So therefore, I will give it 5 Nittany Lion paws out of 5. — SEAN COLLINS Random Review: Delco Book Store 3 My dear fellow Freshman, consider the follow- ing: Where's the first place we've gone to on that first day of classes? That would be the bookstore. Yes, it's only the size of an average classroom but it serves all 1700+ students here on campus. Now admit it, most of us haven't paid attention to the many goodies around the store, so let me tell you about them. For all you prospective partiers, I have noticed something spectacular for your collection, a Penn State shot glass. Perhaps having this little souvenir at home may remind you to drink respon- sibly during your time here. Most bookstores don't sell clothing of any kind, but half of our bookstore is devoted to really nice clothing for the guys and gals on campus. Nice comfortable sweatshirts, t-shirts, and hats, you name it, they probably have got it. Now the other half of the store of course is home to the countless number of textbooks that we all must have for our classes. Boy, those books cost a bundle don't they? And on a shelf towards the back of the store, is the campus best-seller section. Yes, even more books. Now, on the same shelf as the shot glasses are these interesting looking notepads. They're inside this really nice cover with PENN STATE UNIVERSITY printed on the front. It's a nice gift for maybe the richer students because it's about $15.00, but check it out anyway. - Ever been frustrated with a tough book like Orwell's 1984. Well you're in luck, the bookstore has a smaller version called SPARKNOTES. It breaks down complicated books like 1984 by chapter and analyzes all the themes and the char- acters so that you can understand it a little better. And finally we all have to remember to pick up our Penn State license plate for our cars. It's the most popular souvenir I hear. — JOHN MILLER photo by Matt Kelly Chinua Hawk Only two weeks into the school year, and Chris Cola, from student life, has already brought us two amazing performances in the Lion's Den as part of the Penn State Delco Fireside Music Series. On August 30th (the always exciting first day of school), we were blessed with the soulful sounds of Chinua Hawk, and on September 7th, we laughed along with the crazy on-stage antics of 2 Skinny Dorks. 2 Skinny Dorks is an "acoustic funk" band inspired by the sounds of jam bands like Phish, Grateful Dead, the Philly local band G. Love and Special Sauce, and The King of Interplanetary Funk George Clinton. They were here as part of their "Spread Love" tour (their 2nd national tour), made up primarily of college circuit shows and bars. Interestingly enough, they were voted the #1 unsigned band by the Rock and Roll hall of fame. A title that the Dorks appreciate but jokingly com- ment, "[We're] hoping to drop the unsigned part soon." They're currently in talks with Universal Records, this recognition has helped get the band, as they say, get pushed into new limits. Chinua Hawk, from our neighbor state New Jersey, gave us a soulful set filled with originals and classic covers like "My Girl" and "What's Going On." Despite three previous attempts at coming to this campus, this was Chinua's first successful Delco appearance. If you recall, his first attempt resulted in a snow-out last January. Chinua recalls the event with a smile. "[I was] about five minutes from the school when they informed me they were closed." He said. The second time, he got bronchitis (a singers worst enemy) and was unable to perform. Chinua draws his inspiration from everything from John Mayer to Stevie Wonder. He's been touring since 2000 with the National Association for Campus Activities. 2 Skinny Dorks ___photo by Matt Kelly
