The Lion's Eye Opinion November 2, 2004 Letter to the editors Voice your choice at polls, not with your mouth It's Election Day. We've all seen the cam- paign commercials and know the slogans. Chances are, you've had someone jump down your throat at least once with a “VOTE FOR BUSH?” sticker or a “BUSH IS SATAN” button. I'm sick of it. Many people are voting for Kerry just because he's not Bush. I don't care what your reason is for voting, because it’s up to you. If you like Bush, awesome. If you like Kerry, awesome. But please, regardless of who wins the election, stop being so anti-people-who- feel-differently-than-me. Perhaps I've seen one too many Bush vs. Kerry debates, but I have had it. Just some quotes I hear in these battles: "Look at me, I'm so Democratic.” "Hey Guys, Let’s hate Bush because that's so punk rock.” It sounds like elementary school kids argu- ing over who gets to pretend to be the White Power Ranger at recess. What amazes me is how both parties can say TV slants too much either way. Seems to me watching a different channel would solve the problem. Bottom line: Grow up and move on with life. MATTHEW KELLY Freshman Letter from the editors "Tis the season... so get out and cast your vote Would you believe Christmas is here? Walk through any store and you will see a Christmas display. In fact, they have been up for a while. For retail, the Christmas season begins in September. There’s another shuffle we are a part of this year: the election. It makes you wonder what Santa will be giving the government and America this year. Are the candidates on Santa’s Good list or Naughty list? It’s funny how similar the two events are. The election season comes once every four years, just like the Olympics. Why not have election Olympics? Just think, the three debates could be an event. Get Ralph Nader in there so they can hand out all three medals. And what's in it for you? The election will - give you a gift, one you get to choose. So vote. Ranveer Basra Natalie Brewer IST Pre-med Matthew Kelly Communications The untold areument: Vote for Bush As you go to the polls today to vote on who will become the next president, I ask you to consider what I am about to say. Here is why I believe it is important for George W. Bush to win this election. More than 25 million Iraqi people are now free of the oppression and tyranny they suffered under Saddam Hussein. The recent Duelfor report, widely publicized for stating that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, also stated that UN sanctions in Iraq were not working. Saddam was siphoning large amounts of money from the perverted "oil for food" program and was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Charles Duelfor, himself, established that the world is safer with Saddam behind bars. This war is not another Vietnam. People are afraid that too many lives are being lost. Do they remember how many lives were lost when terror- ists hijacked four planes and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center? We cannot stand as a divided nation. We must support Bush and our troops in their effort to secure Iraq's freedom and our own freedom and security here at home. Remember, it took more than eight years to get Germany and Japan stabi- lized after WWIL. Kerry is not strong enough to lead us through a war, especially with the knowl- edge of his 20 year anti-military record lingering in my mind. He voted against the Gulf War in 1990, even when the U.N. gave our coalition the approval to drive Saddam out. If his "global test" wasn't a factor for him then, how can it be now? He voted against supplies for our troops in combat and he insults our allies, saying they were "bribed." How can we count on Kerry succeeding in Iraq if this is how he treats his relations. The polls show our military personnel support the Bush-Cheney ticket by more than 3-1. Many Americans feel that if Bush is re-elected there is a greater chance of a draft. I believe that there is a much more likely chance for a draft if Kerry is named to office. His testimony after Vietnam hurt our POW's being held by the North Vietnamese and actually helped N. Vietnam win that war. If you are not voting for Bush based on the economy, think again. Bush is not responsible for the current economic mess. Before Clinton left office in 2001, corporate scandals were revealed leading to a recession that became substantially worse after 9/11. President Bush's tax cuts helped place our economy back on track. If you believe Bush is incompetent, the econo- my is in ruins, and Iraq is in crisis, consider where you're getting the information. The major news media are slanted against Bush. TV stations cover how many deaths there are, how Saddam Hussein did not have any WMD, and there is for- ever another celebrity bashing Bush. Michael Moore’s movie was aired in almost every movie theater, but when a similar movie was made about Kerry, it was banned. Don’t let the media brainwash you. Don’t vote for someone just because they are endorsed by Roseanne Barr or Star Jones. Give yourself more credit than that. Why doesn't the media cover the posi- tive side of Iraq? Iraqi soldiers are being trained to take control of their freedom, children are attending school, women now have, or soon will have, similar rights as men (this was the first year they were able to participate in the Olympics), hos- pitals are opening, homes are under con- struction, and elections will be held. This is important news that rarely receives coverage. The media exists to report the news, not to have an opinion on it or to interpret it. Students can get a fresh perspective from other kinds of media. Talk radio in Philadelphia such as 990-AM, and 1210-AM feature talk pro- grams almost any time during the week. Give yourself choices, isn't that what being an American is all about? Hear both sides of the story. I am confident that if you did, you'd cast your ballot for Bush. Choose the world, choose America, choose the economy, choose freedom and security, choose George W. Bush.
