March 30, 2004 The Lion's Eye ve on Entertainment Page 5 Lion's paws: Places to go ... things to do Restaurants San Garlo San Carlo is a charming little Italian restaurant located on South Street in Philadelphia next to Second Street. The food is amazing and the atmos- phere is authentic. This place is elegant and comfortably casual, not fancy. Prices are reasonable and the serv- ice is polite, knowledgeable and prompt. Salads and appetizers range between $5 and $10. For a light appetizer the calamari is an excellent choice. Entrees start at - $10 to about $22. The chicken marsala is deliciously seasoned and served with a savory wine sauce and herb-roasted potatoes. The music sounds like a satellite channel that plays top 40 Italian songs, which is very fitting. With cozy lighting and mouth-watering aromas, San Carlo makes for a fabulous dining experience. — CHARLOTTE BARR Movies The Passion of The Christ Would you like to travel back in time and witness for yourself Christ's life, crucifixion, and resurrection? Then, simply travel to your nearest movie the- ater and join the millions of others who have witnessed the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ's life in "The Passion of the Christ,” directed by Mel Gibson. All of the five senses are injected “into this film, allowing it to evolve as a more subjective and personal film than any other about Jesus Christ. Other blockbuster movies like "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "King of Kings" are mainly objective, documentary-like timeline accounts of Christ's life. Only small blurbs at the end of these films are devoted to the crucifixion and resurrection, the two most important symbolic events of Christ's existence. "The Passion" is not a simple timeline. It is a film about these events plus flashbacks to Jesus' teachings of love and peace. Your mood will be stimulat- ed by the sharp contrasting darks and lights of the cinematography inspired by Renaissance painter of religious scenes, Caravaggio. The flawless acting of the cast caus- es the audience to empathize with all the scenes in the film. James Caviezel brings all the stoicism, innocence, and masculinity necessary to his portrayal of Jesus, which Mel Gibson saw in Caviezel's earlier roles as Edmond Dantes in "The Count of Monte Cristo" and as Catch in "Angel Eyes." A moth- er's devotion and ultimate sacrifice of her son is heartrendingly portrayed by Maia Morganstern as Mary, dJesus' mother. A beautiful emotionality unlike any movie I have ever seen dwells with- in this film, with the ultimate lesson that human beings must learn to love one another. The Gospels are depicted with stark realism from the accusation of Jesus, to his scourging, crucifixion, and resurrec- tion. With the authentic languages of Christ's time, Aramaic and Latin, spo- ken in the film, the costuming, and the scenery (filmed in Rome), you feel like you are an actual bystander. Coming out of the theater after I saw this film was like emerging from another uni- verse and stepping onto the seemingly alien planet earth. Everything seemed new as Jesus said to his mother in the film, "I make all things new." — RENEE BLISARD CDs Norah Jones: Feels Like Home & @ @ Norah Jones has proven to the world that she's not a one album woman, not a passing fad in the musi- cal world. With sales topping one mil- lion copies in the first week for her sophomore album entitled "Feels Like Home," it's clear that she hasn't fallen victim to the slump. "Feels Like Home" is a more light- hearted and upbeat collection than Jones' first, taking the exploration of country music elements much farther, something that can be seen in Jones' duet with Dolly Parton in the song "Creepin In." Smooth vocals and relaxed music combine to make for an extremely enjoyable listening experience and though many listeners may be initially turned off by the album's country feel, given time Jones' old sound can be heard and the new sounds blend into them. — JEFF HUBER ADVERTISEMENT | universiry + Fully Furnished 2 and 4 Bedroom Apts. i «High Speed intemet Acces 5-8 wil ble ©» Hii Package Anmilatic |» hdividund Leases «Free Cable : |» Full Siz Washer/Dryer in eachdpartment « Terms, Ba she tall, Volleyball Courts + Bectronic Mann System: » fitness Canter ; = » Computer Labowith High-Speed Intemet + Recreation Room » 1 Swimming Poo!
