Page 8 The Lion's Eye Fye on SPOILS for tennis program By CARRIE GOLDSTEIN Lion's Eye staff writer October 18, 2002 Bill McCourt, who directs the fortunes of the Penn State Delco coed tennis team, is a proud coach these days. And with good reason. Of a total of seven matches, the tennis team had won five through early October. "We have a new girl on the team, Holly Bauder," McCourt said, "and with her and our other No. 1 play- er, Jackie Clark, we are going to go right to the cham- pionship.” The championship matches were Oct.12 and 13 at University Park. All of the Commonwealth campus- es - York, Abington, Hazelton, Mont Alto, Berks and Delco - were involved. The Lion’s Eye went to press Oct. 11, but plans a fall sports roundup in the next edition, Nov. 15. The weekend wasn't limited to all work, though. As McCourt says, "It's a great time. (It's just like) a party." Delco won the championship two years ago and the coach of six years is confident they will repeat that success. With players like Julie Hill, Emily Jackson, Chris Nevis and Joshua Zelbovitz, to name a few, McCourt was confident they would. SCHEDULES ello again. I'm back from geek Hmm camp at Redmond, Wash., sporting my new high- water pants and Microsoft Pocket Protector version 2002, ready to answer all your computer questions. This year, for the first article, I fig- ured I'd grease the skids with a little wireless internet piece, a/k/a wireless networking. Many of you may have seen students walking around campus with their lap- tops, or surfing the net while in the lounge, or chatting via AIM while sitting on a bench. This is all thanks to Penn State Delco's own wireless network, courtesy Computer Services. Through this wireless network, you can connect a laptop to our wired net- work and receive e-mail, send your eLion transcripts to your parents, or use ANGEL for your classes. The concept is really quite simple: Portable and wireless ... First, you need a laptop to connect: with. Once, I did know: a student that actually carried his tower PC to and from school to use the network, but he ended up in the hospital with a hernia. He could have saved the money by just buying a laptop. Second, you will need an Orinoco Wireless Gold Card. No other card will work with our wireless network. Drop by Computer Services, and we will con- figure your card for you, and you can sign some paperwork that gives us rights to your soul ... er, I mean, disclaimer statements. After that, you’re ready to burn the airwaves with your wireless internet surfing. If you like the idea of surfing the internet on-campus, anywhere, anytime, you might want to consider installing your own wireless network at home. All you need is a wireless network router or roller hockey most of their lives. The Computer Guy it’s the only way to surf that is the same type as your wireless card, in this case 802.11b compliant. If you do decide to do this, please consult the user's manual included with the router. It has very important information on securing your home network, and set- ting it up properly. Consider joining a free wireless organi- zation like phillywireless.org. PhillyWireless is a nonprofit users group that meets and discusses the possibility of offering free, wireless "hotspots." Hotspots are areas of about 300-500 feet where a user can connect his or her lap- top to a wired access point, and surf the Web. Phillywireless looks at areas in and around the Philadelphia area for locating their hotspots. It meets the first Monday of every month right here on Campus, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Room 201 Classroom. That's all for now. See you in a few weeks! Questions? Comments?
