March 1, 2000 - LION’S EYE - Page 3" — SPORTS Basketball Wrapup: Women Make The Playoffs; Men Post Winning Season By B. Feick Lion’s Eye Staff Associate Delco’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have posted winning seasons this year, with the women earning playoff berths in both their leagues. The women hoopsters played PSU Berks February 28 for the eastern Commonwealth Campus Athletic Association (CCAC) title and the opportunity to meet the western winners at University Park’s Bryce Jordan Center to determine the league champions. During the regular CCAC season, the women went 8-0, beating PSU Abington, Berks, MontAlto, and York each twice. In the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) which includes some of the CCAC teams, the women posted a 13-3 season record, but lost to North Hampton CC in post-season play. The men played an outstanding season also, as their 14-7 overall record shows. They ended up on the winning side in the CCAC with a 11-6 season, one win short of making the playoffs. Both teams were some of the strongest Delco has produced in recent years, and they filled the stands with excited fans for their well-played games. The coaches are looking for strong teams again next year with a number of this year’s starters returning on both squads. Karate is one of many sports clubs on campus which allow students to compete outside the University without playing varsity level. By Owen Andrew Bergwall Lion’s Eye Staff Writer “Clubs give students an outlet to play the sports they love with the recognition of Penn State’s name,” explained Doreen Hettich, Director of Student Life, when asked why club sports are so popular on campus. Among the spring club sports offered are karate, rugby, and men’s volleyball. Also, a winter club sport, ice hockey, is still running. Sh The Karate Club teaches its members Okinawin karate and is a fun way to get into this interesting sport. The Rugby Club, which has been practicing indoors on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for the past month, opens its first season with a game against Albright College in Reading on March 11. Fans can watch the first home game, against Temple, on March 18. Men’s Volleyball, coached by Tom Pflieger, Hockey team’s heimet emblem in memory of Scott Latimer. begins its season March 18 at PSU Mont Alto. The team’s first home tournament is April 1. : Delco’s Ice Hockey Club, running strong in its third year, came off a four- game winning streak to meet Bucknell in a play-off match March 26. “We’ve had a rocky season so far, with some ups and downs,” said sophomore Ben Seidman, co-president of the club. “Now that we’re really playing as a team, the season is almost ending. Organizing the Hockey Club with co-president Derek Rieck, who deals with the bulk of fundraising and league set up, has taught me that getting a group of people to be a team is a challenge,” said Seidman. “But with strong leadership from our coaches Chuck Gorman and Ron Martz, team captain Reick, and assistant captains Mike D’ Alonzo, Jim Gregg, and me, we accomplish a lot.” The hockey players dedicated this season to their friend Scott Latimer, a Delco student killed by a drunk driver last year, by wearing his initials in the lion’s paw on their helmets. Commenting on the impact of club sports on campus, Doreen Hettich said, “Club sports are one of the most difficult things to start and organize. That teaches students leadership.” In A Paid Research Project /estigational cal Cancer And Genital Warts. ) Call Dr. Thomas or Deb Dunbar at Women’s Health Source at 610-872-6026 UMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS?
