av nies PENNSTATE Delaware County > WS Vol. XXXI, No. 8 April 20, 2000 Celebrating Spring Week & Earth Day By Bob Dugan Lion’s Eye Staff Writer On Saturday, April 22, approxi- mately 500 million around the world will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Earth Day in one way, shape, or form. After the first Earth Day in 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created and Congress passed the Clean Air Act. In the next few years the government also passed the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Now, thirty years later, the world is ready to...party??? While University - Park holds a week long Earth Day festival, Delco is showcasing an exciting speaker and holding a concert on Monday, April 24. Eric Pappas from the Clean Air Council will talk about environmental issues including the present and future of renewable energy. Mark Rust, who originally performed at the first ever Woodstock, will present a special concert focusing -on the celebration of nature. In Philadelphia, the classic hits radio station WMGK is sponsoring its own Earth Day celebration at Belmont Plateau in Fairmont Park. They promise fun for the entire family and performarnices by the music groups The Byrds and Jefferson Starship. If you feel the need to celebrate outside of the Philadelphia region, Leonardo DiCaprio himself is the chairman for Earth Fest 2000, a concert and convention on the Mall in Washington, D.C. The festival promises to be the biggest Earth Day celebration in the states, and as an added bonus the fest will be entirely powered by renewable, clean energy. After Earth Day is history, the SGA will offer opportunities for celebrating from Monday, April 24 to Friday, April 28 for the annual SGA Spring Week. This tradition includes the stepping down of the current SGA to make way for the new group. On Monday during common hour their will be outdoor games like Frisbee and volleyball setup and indoor games in the Lion’s Den. Tuesday features acupuncture and massage sessions plus a psychic will attempt to predict the future in the Lion’s Den. The SGA Awards Luncheon will be held on Wednesday on the second floor of the Commons building. Members of all of the campus clubs will be present and honorary awards will be handed out. An exciting talent show will be presented in front of Commons on Thursday and on Friday grab some free food during the outdoor Movin’ on Picnic. Last is the annual Spring Fling dance which will be held on Saturday night from 9 to 1 AM at the Renaissance Hotel near the Mark Rust, a singer/songwriter, will perform a concert at Delco on Monday, April 24; for Earth Day. : Outstanding Students And Faculty By Greg Haas Lion’s Eye Staff Writer At the AGA/Student Life Awards luncheon on Wednesday, April 26, the campus will honor three students with the Walker, the Outstanding Adult Student, and the Outstanding Service Awards. The ceremony will boast the best that Penn State Delco has to offer. The Prestigious Penn State Walker Award “recognizes undergraduate stu- dents enrolled at the Commonwealth Colleges whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and citizenship have been directed into programs and services that have posi- tively influenced fellow students and have contributed to the prestige and well- being of their campus and, hence, to the reputation of the University as a whole.” The Outstanding Adult Student Award “recognizes an outstanding adult student (age 21+) at this campus who demon- strates initiative, tenacity and flexibility in overcoming obstacles to furthering his/her education; [and] who serves as a role model to other adult students...” The Outstanding Service Award “recognizes an outstanding student who serves the campus and/or the community through Honored assisting individuals or improving situations” The three awards will come at the end of the ceremony in the large conference room that honors all students active in student organizations and the Student Government Association. This semester has brought a number of awards to the campus community. At the Honors Convocation on Wednesday, April 12, the Hanes Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award were presented to Doris “Tiz” Griffith and Dr. John Ousey respectively. Griffith, a faculty member and campus Athletic Director for over a decade, was honored for her outstanding achievement in those roles. Ousey, associate professor of earth sciences, was honored for his excellence in teaching over his 30 years at Delco. Penn State Delco faculty has more University wide outstanding teaching and advising awards per capita than any other campus, including University Park; following in this spirit, Wayne McMullen, associate professor of speech communication at Delco, has been named the George Atherton Excellence in Teaching Award winner for 2000. The award honors excellence in teaching at (Continued on page 3) Delco’s Spring Graduation Set For May 13th By Owen Andrew Bergwall Lion’s Eye Staff Writer “With a two-minute open microphone for every graduating student, our graduation ceremony is one of the most personal there is,” said Dr. George Franz, Director of Academic Affairs at PSU Delco. The spring Delaware County . commencement ceremony will take place May 13, at 10:00 am. Approxi- mately 76 students will take part, including those graduating from the Delaware County campus, as well as students who began their college career at Delco then moved onto University Park. This option is helpful for students not wishing to have their families from Delaware County drive the long distance to Happy Valley. The program begins with the Academic Processional of graduating seniors and faculty. Edward S.J. Tomeszko, Executive Officer, gives the graduation welcome, and the warm, ceremonial pace is set. Following an address from the guest speaker, David H. Lipson, Jr.,”78 Comm, President and ‘Publisher, Philadelphia Magazine, Ernest L. Repice, President of the Campus Advisory Board, gives Dr. Tomeszko the Authorization to confer degrees. After all students receive their degrees, and have spoken their own personal words at the podium, Karl Grieb, the Alumni Relations Coordinator will announce greetings from the campus Alumni Society. Next all scholastic honors will be presented to the seniors. All in all, the PSU Delco graduation ceremony is very personal, and family oriented, keeping with Delco’s traditions. After the recessional, the campus will hold a reception in honor of the graduates and their guests in the beautiful Classroom building lounge, with music by Joseph Buches.
