December 4, 1998 Ice Hockey Report: Things Falling Into Place By Gina Ferzetti Lion's Eye Staff Writer Penn State’s icemen are off to a 2-4 start, but don’t let that record deceive you. Coach Chuck Gorman feels that although this team doesn’t have a winning record as of yet, they are improving each week, and the players are getting accustomed to playing with each other. According to Coach Gorman, sophomore Matt Stuzmen takes control of the game with his physical presence, and Matt McCann leads the defense with his amazing speed. Fan support for this club is still pretty low, so come out and the support the team. A great chance to do so will be Weds., Dec., 9, when Penn State Delco plays Penn State Berks at the First Union Spectrum. Not only will this be a great competition between the two campus’s, you will also get to check out the Philadelphia Phan- toms vs. the Rochester Americans prior to the game. All for the small price of just $14! All proceeds ben- efit the Penn State Delco Ice Hockey Club. There will even be a caravan for anyone who needs a ride up to the Sprectrum on Weds. afternoon at 2:30 in the main parking lot. See any ice hockey player for details or to purchase tickets. And we’ll see you at the game! Everybody’s got hoop dreams! Player Profile: PSU-Del. Co.’s Dapper Dandy By Jim McGovern Lions Eye Staff Writer The Penn State Delaware County Men’s basketball team has high hopes for the 1998-99. season. After an optimistic ending to their season last year, the team will be depending heavily on the freshman players recruited to make a run at the playoffs this year. One freshman who hopes to contribute to a winning sea- son at Delco this year is Leeshawn Allen, a 5°7 shooting guard and small forward from Chester High School. “We have a pretty good team this year, “Allen says, “We’re very athletic, and we think we can im- prove on last year’s team.” Most of Allen’s playing ex- perience comes from summer league ball in the Chester area, but this hasn’t posed a problem for him adapting to the stricter nature of the college game. “We have a motion offense where we slow the ball up, dump down to the big guys on the block, and they can either take it to the hole or pass it back out to the guards for an outside shot.” This type of offense also al- lows Allen to do what he likes best, take the ball to the basket. So it’s no wonder that even though the season has just begun Allen has already, half-jokingly, made some bold pre- dictions about the team’s future this season. “Go 24-0, run through the playoffs, and take the champion- ship.” With players as confident as this, Penn State Delco might be the team that causes the rest of the league to take a deep breath when they see them on their schedule.
