April 7, 1998 - LIONS EYE - Page 3 New Club Brings the Caribbean to Delco By Tracey Dinh Do you listen to Reggae? Do you sometimes feel inclined to convert to Rastafarianism? Do you find yourself sometimes wishing that instead of class you were bathing in the crystal waters of Barbados? If any of these apply to you, and even if they don’t, you might be interested to know about a new club on campus. “There is more to the Caribbean besides its revolutionary political history and hot spot tourist attractions.” The Caribbean Club, formed this year, was created in an effort to educate our campus community on various aspects of Caribbean culture and heritage. Although new to our campus the club is growing in popularity and already boasts at least twenty members including Johane-Pierre, the club president and Kevin Colbert, the advisor. Currently the club is working on sending some of its members to New York City for the Sixth Annual Northeast Regional Caribbean Students Conference hosted by Brown University on April 10. This conference will showcase a series of seminars that will educate students on Caribbean technology, dance, politics, and race issues, to name a few. Students will also get a chance to hear the key-note speaker, RT Hon P.J. Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica and head of the People’s National Party. : Club members will then take what they have learned back to the campus with them. They hope to host an activity open to the entire campus where students can learn about each island of the Caribbean and taste the different foods unique to that region. If all this seems to interest you, the club is eager to accept new members. There is more to the Caribbean besides its revolutionary political history and hot spot tourist attractions. The Caribbean Club hopes to introduce students to all the facets of this exotic area. Kevin Colbert explains, “I hope all different types of people join. We don’t want to give the perception that the club is culturally discriminatory. We welcome all ideas or suggestions that anyone might have.” To become a member, you can contact Johane-Pierre at jxp301@psu.edu or Kevin Colbert in the computer lab in the Main Building.
