- LIONS EYE - , 1998 Delco Varsity’ s Tennis Team Looks Toward Great Season By Christina Papa Spring is here, and so is the varsity tennis team. This year approximately 15 players are on the team, led by a new coach from Rosemont College, Jeanne Craft. The captains are Jean Barclay (4th semester, B.A.) and Joe McCall (2nd semester). After just one week of practice, the players already have a positive outlook on the season. This year, they will be playing other area schools, unlike last year when they only played other Penn State campuses. “We have a good chance of going to the tournament and doing well,” said Jean Barclay. “As Tiz would say, it’s a game of consistency. If we can be consistent, we'll have a really good season.” The team also has experience. Jeff Liu, a freshman from Radnor High school, has played four years of varsity tennis. “With all my years of experience, I fecl that I will be a pivotal player on the team,” he commented. + Craft is on vacation. Helen Walker, another member of the team, feels that “each player has potential, and we are a tenacious team.” “Their speed as a team and stamina ... gave them an advantage.’ Tiz Griffith, Athletic Director, had been coaching the team for ten years, but has not coached in the past two years due to her other responsibilities. This week, however, she has been coaching because Jeanne “I'm sorry I'm not coaching,” Tiz said. “They're tremendous student athletes, and I think they have a good chance of winning it this year.” The players are very optimistic going into the scason. Ned Persons, 4th semester B.A. major, said, “I think we have a really great coach this year, and I predict a better than usual result for the season.” Sports HOCKEY DOUBLEHEADER! Men’s Lax Team Sirdagles By Rob Coyle The Delco Men's lacrosse team is struggling through a tough season. “We have amazing talent,” commented team captain Mike Borsch, “we just don’t practice enough.” Strong efforts from players such as Mark Kalman, Joe Iredell, Mike Borsch, and Jeff Hickey have fallen to the wayside in recent losses to Princeton, Temple, and the College of New Jersey. Although the losses are mounting, Borsch insists, “We're not about to give up.” With the end of the season less than a month away, the team hopes to string a few wins together and salvage the disappointing season against tough competition. Games against Drexel (April 7) and Albright (8) round out the season. Both games are home and start at 4 p.m. on the fields above the large parking lot. Two players from the College of New Jersey play “Keep Away” from a Delco player.
