February 10, 1998 — LION’S EYE — Page 9 Honor and Recognition To Penn State’s ‘Finest’ By Christina Papa Once again, a membr of the Penn State Delco community has been given special honor and recognition, not to mention a big surprise. On January 23,1998, a reception was held in honor of Dr. Madlyn Hanes, former Director of Academic Affairs at the Delaware County Campus from July 1988 to March 1997. She is now Chief Executive Officer at Penn State Great Valley. One fundred people -- staff, faculty, advisory board members, administrators, and spouses -- attended the dinner and program at the Towne House in Media. Dr. Hanes was recognized for her significant contributions to the Delaware County Campus, specifically to the faculty. Dr. Hanes was an extraordinary friend to the faculty and always worked hard to help them advance their careers. "She was absolutely the most wonderful supporter of the faculty. She was a great boss," said Dr. Mary Gergen, one of the evening's organizers, who believes that Dr. Hanes had a lot to do with the fact that the Delaware County Campus has the most teaching awards of all the campuses in the Commonwealth College. Two features of the celebration were a clever parody on award Dr. “Madlyn Hanes, pictured with Dr. Tomezsko, Campus CEO gr i . Georgopulous, Physics professor, was honored for her contributions to Penn State nominations written by Joe Biscontini and a four feet tall "Magnificent Hulk Barbie Doll" trophy made by Connie Kirker, which was surprise to Dr. Hanes. But the real surprise came when it was announced that close to $14,000 was collected for an endowed Faculty Prize in the name of Dr. Madlyn Hanes. This money was solicited by a committee that consisted of Peter Georgopulous, Associate Professor of Physics, Elizabeth Buckmaster, Asisstant Professor of English, Connie Kirker, Assistant Professor of Integrative Arts, and Mary Gergen, Associate Professor of Psychology/ Women's Studies. Dr. Hanes was very appreciative of the award, and will have input as to exactly how it will be implemented. It will be presented for the first time at the Honors Convocation in the Spring of 1998 and will be awarded to a faculty member who has made an exceptional contribution in teaching, research, or service. Dr. Wayne McMullen, chairman of the Faculty Senate, will head the Hanes Prize Committee, with help from two faculty volunteers. Dr. Hanes will also be presented with a scrapbook containing pictures from the night of the celebration from the Executive Committee lead by Jane Cooper, Associate Professor of Biology. as Delco’s former Director of Academic Affairs. Don’t worry, go to the Learning Center in room 109 Vairo Library and become acquainted with the friendly staff that’s available to you, the student, at Penn State Delco. There are no strict schedules and no fees. The trick to success in college is to keep up with your studies, and the Learning Center is a great place to get on the right track. “Don’t wait until you're in trouble to come in and let us help you,” explains Mrs. Debbie Ousey, a delightful and friendly woman who, along with, Mrs. Sharon Manco, Mrs. Jackie Hudson, Mrs. Kathy De Marco and Mrs. Patricia Ellis, run the Center and its programs under the direction of Learning Assistance Coordinator, Norma Notzold. ~ In the Learning Center you'll find text books, study guides, and student evaluations, as well as tutors for all subjects, support services for students with disabilities, or for those learning English as a second language. The Center publishes a newsletter explaining all the great aspects that they provide and how you can reach your full potential as a student. While picking up this letter, check out the Learning Center bulletin board for information and talk with an instructor.
