Page 10 — LION’S EYE — New Counselors Intern At Student Life Office By Aimee Stone Periodically, the Student Life Office provides internships for graduate students from surrounding colleges and universities who are working towards their master’s degree in counseling. This year’s students were Dan Choi and Christine Boyle. Choi, currently completing his master’s degree in clinical counseling psychology from LaSalle University, arrived at Delco last summer and began work with the Freshman Testing Counseling and Advising Program. Boyle, working for a master’s degree in post secondary and secondary school counseling from West Chester University, began her internship during September in Student Life and has rotated throughout the six Integrated Counseling offices. At the beginning of this spring semester, both Boyle and Choi were offered part-time jobs as replacements for Mr. Virgil Perry, a campus counselor, who is in Korea until June on military duty. “I'm here to help students with any personal problems they may be facing,” said Choi, who will be working numerous jobs as a personal counselor for students, helping in carcer exploration, and serving as a member of the Judicial Advisory Board. Boyle will be working part-time on career development, in the urban education program graduates, and on creating a database for all students to find internship opportunities available to them. “The career development staff is available to all students needing assistance in determining majors, career decisions, and job opportunities,” explained Boyle. This month, Student Life is opening a Personal Resource Center for all students. Information on careers, internships, and opportunities will be offered along with personal counseling to those facing challenges. Choi and Boyle will both be working in the center and are eager to help. Their offices are located in Student Life on the second floor of the Commons. Appointments are not required. Commonwealth Lit Mag Honors Delco Student By Kelly Holmes Dr. Adam Sorkin, Professor of English at Penn State Delco, was undoubtedly impressed when he recently read a short story by Joel Shafer-Harris, who is now a published writer in the fifth edition of The Palimpsest Review. Joel extraordinary young man who is extremely talented in creative writing. By getting his literature published, this student has accomplished one of the greatest goals that a writer can achieve. The Palimpsest Review is the student literary publication for the Commonwealth campuses of Penn State University. The short stories and poems published through this literary magazine have undergone inspection and analysis from creative writing teachers, poetry and short story judges, and the magazine's editors. Joel is currently attending school at University Park as a psychology major, but in the spring of 1996 he was a student in Sorkin’s English 50 class, “An Introduction to Creative Writing.” Dr. Sorkin said, “The wisest teaching is the teaching that uses a hands- off approach. The teacher must only encourage revision, revision, revision. This is true especially in creative achievement courses.” Dr. Campus Play: ‘Antigone (Continued from page 8) After two years the work is finally done and ready for the real test: the audience at Delco. But can a play written some 2000 years ago stand the test of time? “I think it’s understood by today’s society,” Dr. Robinson explained. “It’s a play about ethics I think (the audience) will connect with it that way.” “OK, so what's it about?” you ask. Well, it's about love, power, war, and sex (including an incestial past). What else do you need to know? The play will take place on April 17, 18, 24, and 25, in room 101 of the main building. Times for all these shows is 8:00pm. Another showing is Shafer-Harris is an: Sorkin also explains that this is the second time in the six issues of the maagazine that a student from the Delco campus has won the award. Delco’s first victory came from the hands of Sadie O’Deay who won the award for poetry in a past edition. The magazine encourages anyone with an interest to submit their literary work. The editor-in-chief, Jim Manis from the Hazelton campus, is very appreciative of the entries and said, “There is simply no way to express the importance of work submitted for publication when that work is not accepted, but believe me it is. You make the magazine better because you tried. I for one, truly do value your contributions regardless of how intangible they may be.” You can read Joel's short story in the fifth edition of The Palimpsest Review which is now available on the Web. You can reach the pages by going to <http://www.2.hn.psu.edu/faculty / jmanis/ palimp.htm> and going to the table of contents. The hard copy of the fifth volume is also available in the campus library. The Palimpsest Review is now accepting student submissions for the sixth volume. The deadline is May 15, 1998. As always a $50.00 cash award will be made to the authors of the best poem and the best short story. 9 also scheduled for April 26 at 2:00pm. All performances are free and open to the public. The play has already been cast and has begun rehearsal, however, much help is still needed behind the scenes. If you have experience with behind the scene work or would just like to help, contact Dr. Patricia Robinson or Ron Hill for information. But, if you've still got that acting bug, there are talks of a series of one act plays also set for late April. Without interest though, it might not happen. So if you have a habit of watching TV and saying to yourself, “Hey; I can do that!,” contact Ron Hill for more information.
