February 5, 1997 — LION’S EYE — Page 7 New Business Organization Works With the Community By Greg Jurkowski One of the things that makes Penn State Delco a strong campus is the number of student organizations on campus. Such organizations as the Student Government Association, Lion Ambassadors, and the Service Corps strengthen the campus through service to both the campus community and our local community. This campus is about to become even stronger through the formation of a new club, Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE). SIFE is a national organization, created by S. Robson Walton, the chair of Walmart. It is designed to bridge the gap for students between college and the business world through service - to the community. Prior to semester break, Dr. Ed Tomezsko, Campus CEO, was contacted by S. Robson Walton, and later by Wolfgang R. Schmitt, the Chair and CEO of Rubbermaid Inc., to present what SIFE is and to see if a SIFE team could be created here on campus. After reviewing the information he received, it was passed on to Mr. Virgil Perry, Campus Career Counselor. Mr. Perry liked what he saw and proceeded to contact the National SIFE Headquarters. This got the ball rolling. The National SIFE Headquarters gave Mr. Perry the name of the Regional SIFE Representative, Professor Jean Weiss of Bucks County Community College. Professor Weiss, a Penn State Alum, was more than happy to help Mr. Perry start a team for this campus. Meeting with her and the student president of BCCC’s SIFE team, Mr. Perry asked questions about the feasibility of starting a team. After doing so, they contacted the National Headquarters for recognition and signed an adoption form which made the BCCC team and Delco’s team partners in growth and preparation for an upcoming regional competition in April. Mr. Perry started to test the waters, looking for students who would be interested in becoming part of Delco’s SIFE team. Twenty students joined the SIFE Team, including Jason Dirnbauer (4th Sem, Business Administration) who was appointed the Student Chair of the SIFE Team. Mr. Perry and the SIFE team then went looking for members of the business community who would be interested in joining Delco’s Sife team as members of their Business Advisory Board. Sigmond Z. Moscow, proprietor of Sigmond Z. Moscow & Assoc. and a co-sponsor of the Jewish Business Network, has been appointed the Chair of the Business Advisory Board. Other organizations who have joined the Board are Walmart, the Philadelphia Tribune, the Philadelphia Regional Office of McDonald's Inc., Corestates Bank, In Roades Inc., and the Philadelphia US Army Recruitment Command. The Business Advisory Board also contains members of the campus community, including Dr. Tomezsko; Mr. John Terrell and Dr. Michael Kersnick, business faculty; Lynn Johnson, Director of Campus Development; and Meghan Gibbons, Manager of the Campus Bookstore. The SIFE Team had its first oficial meeting on January 27 in order to outline its goals. Their primary goal is to gain formal recognition as a club on campus by the Student Government Association. Another is to establish a chapter of Toastmasters on campus. This is a group which focuses on opportunities for the campus community and the community at large to enhance their speaking skills. A third goal is to work with other campus clubs on group service projects , such as the Chester Youth Build Inc. and the Chester YWCA. Te PENN STATE STUDENTS Looking for a University job? Need Money for Tuition? Scholarships Are Available By Christina Papa “With two-thirds of our students receiving some kind of financial assistance, and with the majority of our seniors facing significant debt upon graduation, I find it astounding but heartwarming that these students manage each year to contribute more than $100,000 for a senior class gift. And as if that weren't enough, our students, in the nation’s largest student- run philanthropy, raise more than $1 million each year through the IFC/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon, supporting children who are victims of cancer [at the University’s Hershey Medical Center.” — Graham Spanier, 1996 State-of-the- University Address. These are just two examples of the many ways in which Penn State receives money for scholarships, program enhancements such as the construction of the technology building, and organizations such as the Volunteer Service Corps. Itis Lynn Johnson's job to get the money. As Director of Development for Penn State Delco, she meets with corporations, alumni, and other sources of support to meet this year’s goal of $1 million. “Penn State's solid reputation is a great asset to the fundraising efforts,” Ms. Johnson said. She also explained that many supporters give money to increase their visibility, or make themselves known better to the public. Some of the supporters are right here among us. Faculty and staff, particularly at this campus, have been excellent sources of funds. The Edward S.J. Tomezsko Scholarship, which is funded by the Advisory Board, is awarded to academically talented students in scientific fields of study. The Sylvia Schaffer Prize in General Arts and Sciences is funded by Sylvia Schaffer, a former student and alumna. This award is granted for superior performance in the General Arts and Sciences program. The Delaware County Campus Faculty Award is given to a full-time student who has completed at least one academic year and has an outstanding academic record. It is funded by the faculty and other interested persons and organizations. In addition, Dr. Ed Tomezsko and his wife Jean have generously endowed a scholarship to support students majoring in early childhood and elementary education, called the Ada Case Lobrovick Scholarship. Altogether, Penn State Delco offers over 20 scholarships and awards that are designed to support students. Those eligible for these awards will soon be notified by mail. Any student with a 3.0 GPA or higher who does not receive a letter by March 1 should see Dr. George Franz in 118 Vairo. Valley Graduate Center. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT!
