Varano adds, “She is 100% efficient in what she does.” Nancy Trainor, who previously worked as a staff assistant in the business office, is the new Student Activities Specialist. Trainor has worked with the SGA for many years. “ feel that the most important thing on this campus is the students and I would like to see them more involved,” says Trainor. Nancy Trainor loved her job in the business office but feels that nothing can top working with the students. She believes that the members of the SGA are going to make her job easier than it might be because By Bob Lewis In an interview with Evette Basemore, Computer and Information Specialist, at Delco Campus, some great new information on our present computer hardware inventory was disclosed. As of the beginning of the Fall Semester thirteen new pieces of equipment have been installed. They are located in the computer lab in room 201f, Library-Learning Center. Ms. Basemore described them,” as ‘State of the Art’ Power PC MAC 7100's. She also said “the equipment we now have is five or six years old, and in computer time that’s ancient.” Ms. Basemore also indicated Student Activities Specialist they are active in what they do and share their opinions. “When the students are at University Park, we want them to look back and say that Delco was their best time,” says Trainor. “We want to see every student enjoy their experience here.” Trainor, along with all the members of the SGA, encourages students to attend SGA meetings. She says, “The meetings are open to everyone. The SGA has many ideas planned for the year. Students should check the calendars that announce SGA activities.” “ 1 am always here for students when they have a problem or if they feel something needs to be done. I keep taffys in my office for the students and would love for them to just stop -by and see me,” says Trainor. There's plenty of room for new members.” She mentioned that the Photography Club is planning events like Halloween pictures and photos with Santa and the Easter Bunny. “We're really looking to expand these clubs this semester,” Theresa pointed out. “There is a lot kids can do with these clubs, especially if they're looking for experience, resume —proffesional heip for students who have English as a second language (ESL). : In the Learning Center, you can strenghten you methods of attacking different courses. In addition, the staff can help you focus on special needs, such as listening skills, procrastination, or concentration. Both clubs also plan to have guest speakers and trips in their itinerary, but no dates have been set yet. By Kristen Zak Delco was recently notified that they would be one of a small number of colleges nationwide to receive an AmeriCorps scholarship. In a recent letter sent to campus CEO Dr. Edward Tomezsko, President Clinton asked Delco to help with “inspiring an ethic of service across our nation.” Clinton wants colleges and universities throughout the United States to participate in a program to promote civic education. AmeriCorps is a national service program which addresses the country’s needs in the areas of education, the environment, public safety, and human needs. By participating, colleges “can strengthen ties to their communities and enhance their student’s civic education,” according to Clinton. First , Clinton asks colleges and universities to include community service as a significant criterion for college admission. Clinton proposes that “at institutions that have selective admissions, including service will send a bold message to high school counselors, parents, and students that high academic and civil standards.” Another way for colleges to get involved is to bring service into the classroom. Clinton states that “by bringing the community into the classroom and the classroom into the community you will enable your students’ to apply the lessons that they have learned to the critical issues that affect our communities.” The scholarship allows colleges to set aside work study funds so they will be available for students who “pay their way through school by serving in the broader community.” Carolyn Bosewell Brings You Here By Tonya Corbin Recruitment from high school to Penn State Delco involves the help of Mrs. Carolyn Bosewell. Her job requires that she visits high schools in Delaware county, including public, private, and Catholic schools. She is also Acting Director at the Philadelphia Recruitment Center along with Mr. Leonard Shotwell, recruiter for Penn State. - - During the fall she generally visits fiftyt to sixty students at a time, and she has contacts with counselors in various high schools. In addition, Mrs. Bosewell makes special visits with minority students and their advisors. ‘She also talks to Black Student Unions, and civic organizations. Mrs. Boswell keeps busy attending College Nights ‘held at community colleges in Delaware county and in Philadelphia. When Mrs. Bosewell recruits students for Penn State, she brings them on campus for a student-guided tour and follows up on their progress during the senior year and on their interest in Penn State. For many students attending Delco right now, Mrs. Bosewell was their first contact with Penn State. She introduced them to the University and encouraged them to become members of Delco campus community. None regret their decision to accept her
