Page 2 — LION’SEYE — Rick's Tips on Campus Security | By Greg Bengston In a recent interview with Rick Schaffer, acting head of security here at Delco, he emphasized a few precautions for students to take to enhance their personal safety. Mr. Schaffer suggests that students start by following the simple guidelines set at the beginning of the semester. Little things such as having a parking permit in your car and understanding that students are not - allowed to park in any space with yellow lines will make security run much more smoothly. Students are also advised to lock their doors and SGA Treasurer Steps Aside By Kristen Zak Student Government Association Treasurer Kim Doolittle resigned on September 30, 1994. Currently there is no one to replace her, and SGA President Rita Varano is handling the finances. The SGA is taking applications for a new treasurer and hopes to have a replacement in about two weeks time. On her resignation Kim Doolittle said, “I resigned because I have a tougher work load this semester and because of my involvement with Lion Ambassadors and Keystone Society. I wanted to devote more time to those organizations.” Because of her involvement with other organizations Doolittle felt that she was being spread too thin. Pr? : “The treasury work takes a lot of time that I just don’t have this semester.” Despite her leaving office Doolittle plans to take an active role in SGA. “I will still be involved in SGA activities; I just won’t have a leadership role.” The SGA will miss Kim Doolittle, and they can only hope that her replacement will put in half as much time as she did. The applications for SGA treasurer are being taken in the Commons Lounge. The SGA has a few candidates in mind and hopes to have the position filled soon. Frosh Rule By Javonne Broady Does it seem to you that freshmen are out-numbering "upperclassmen" at Delco? Does there seem to be more of them around than in recent years? If you said "yes" to both questions, you are right. : According to Ms. Deborah Erie, Director of Enrollment Management, "In the past five years enrollment been down for in-coming students, but this year the numbers for in-coming students are greater than the numbers of returning students.” . Although total compus enrollment this year is about the same as last year, significant changes have occured in various student categories. Listed below are the enrollment figures for the 1992-1993 school year compared to 1993-1994 school year. 1993 1994 Bacculearate 697 716 Associate 116 110 Provisional 142 128 Nondegree 409 410 Graduate 25 24 Total 1389 1388 close their windows when leaving their cars. Schaffer suggests that identification be placed in books in - case of loss or theft. Students must also be aware of their surroundings. If anyone, or anything, looks suspicious, report it immediately to the security office located in room 116. Students at night can contact John McKnight in room ‘116 or page him at 499-0793 for assistance in walking to their cars. At the end of each month, the security office files a “Uniform Crime Report” to be sent to main campus in University Park. The report is usually short due to the cooperation of students here at Penn State Delco. Schaffer said he would like it to continue that way. Adult Students Offer Fun, Food and Funds ‘know is that there are four four-year get a baccalaureate degree without By Janeane Aube Are you ever hungry in between classes, but don’t feel like messing around with those vending machines? Well, don’t. Grab a soft, fresh pretzel for 40 cents on the first floor of main building next to room 101 and help support Penn State Delco’s Adult Student Organization. The money from the pretzel sales goes towards a scholarship fund awarded to adult and traditional students. Last year $1500 worth of scholarships were given out. $1000 went to a deserving adult student and $507 went to a deserving traditional stuclent, which is a full- time student under the age of 23. The organization also held a Beach Volleyball Picnic on Oct. 8 for the adults and their families. Bob Lewis, chairman of ASO, said, “The theme often heard is bring your children and grandchildren to where you work, so we bring them to where we learn.” | The Adult Student Organization was formed to guide adult students through their academic career. Lewis explained, “They have been out of school and they aren’t oriented to the academic community.” Another obstacle for adult students is that many of them have families and full-time jobs. They can’t complete two years here at this branch campus and then head up to University Park like many traditional students do. The S.G.A. office is now on the first floor of the Commons, directly across from the weight room in room 137. The Student Activities Specialist, Nancy Trainor, can be found right next door in room 138. In this location she can work directly in conjunction with the S.G.A. officers. She is there to help guide them on a personal basis. Before the move, it was not convenient for the S.G.A. to communicate with the Student Life Personal because they were located in different buildings. Having these services all in one place makes it more convenient for everyone, programs at Delco so it is possible to Ls especially the students. : ~~ To make life easier for the students, the Student Life Team and Committee recommended moving the DUS advisors and the counselors to the second floor of the Commons building as well.
