Vol. XXV, No. 9 0Nn°S Eye May 1, 1994 PSU Provost Helps Delco Honor Program By Jaime Wentworth What do you get when you bring the Executive Vice-President and Provost of Penn State University, Dr. John Brighton, to the Delaware County Campus to sample a stir-fry prepared at a Wok-a-thon? Well, you get the Closing Ceremonies of the Cultures of - Asia program which took place here April 22. There was the familiar buzz of activity on the Delco campus on Friday, but not just the usual comings and goings of students traversing from building to building to get to their next classes. There were colorful kites made by one of Art Instructor Connie Kirker’s classes being flown, local vendors exhibiting their Asian crafts, and busy vegetable choppers preparing delicious stir-fries. Artist- in-residence, Kanak Chanpa, was also in attendance, painting tee shirts from which the profits go to an orphanage in Bangladesh that she supports. On the more intellectual- but no less exciting- side, the University's 13- member Commission on Racial Diversity attended a banquet that evening at the Peking Restaurant in their honor and in honor of the day’s festivities. The Commission meets once a month at University Park, and their goals are to promote racial diversity on campus. Delco's own Dr. Adam Lui also spoke in Room 101 of the Main Building concerning the success of the Asia program. ; All in all, the ceremonies provided a happy ending to the outstanding, semester-long Cultures of Asia program. Financial difficulties have forced changes in the budget for next year. The causes of the crisis vary. Among the state-related schools like Pitt, Temple, and Lincoln, Penn State receives the lowest amount of funds from the state. Also, the number of graduating seniors in the area, as well as the percentage of graduating high- school seniors enrolling at Delco, has been falling. These facts may paint a bleak picture for the future of Penn State Delco. However, all is not lost. A variety of ideas have been considered as solutions to the budget problem. One Campus Holds SGA Election for Officers By Mike Doyle On Tuesday, April 26, and Wednesday, April 27, elections were held for next semester’s Student Government Association officers. Rita Verano, this year’s Vice President, ran unopposed for the position of President, and Kim Doolittle ran unopposed for Treasurer, the same position she held this year. Both Kathy Artese, this year’s Secretary, and Jeff Pollock, a newcomer to the SGA, ran for Vice President. The office of Secretary remains unfilled. Kim Doolittle ran for the same office again because “I feel comfortable with this position which has taken quite some time to master because of the record keeping, checkbook, and deposit procedures.” She was glad that no one ran against her. “It would have taken a long time to train someone else for this position.” Kim added, “I'm always at the disposal of the President and Vice President and I just want students to know that they can always come to me with their problems or complaints about the activities or lack of activities on campus.” The only race in which two people ran was for the Vice Presidency. Kathy Artese and Jeff Pollock both . campaigned hard for votes, and it was difficult to walk around campus without finding a flier with either one of their names on it. : Kathy Artese ran because she wanted, “more for students and less for the faculty” here on campus. Kathy asked the students to “vote for experience,” since she hasbeen an SGA officer. Kathy said, “I want to back up the President and get ideas for the campus to get better. I want to do more interesting things next semester so more people come.” Finally, Kathy supported having another Spring Fling next year. Jeff Pollock, a Political Science major, looks at the SGA in a different way. Jeff felt that the SGA needed a change. “With a new face in office, we can have new ideas and benefits. I think there are a great many possibilities for the campus. I want students to voice their opinions to have more events.” Jeff believes, “The student’s should run the campus.” He also said that he wants to cut the red tape associated with the SGA so better decisions can be made. “We have the same problems other commuter colleges have. We have to get people to want to stay on campus. One way to do this is to have cool events like DJ parties and Beach Volleyball games.” He also raised the issue of over 21 drinking on campus by saying, “I'd be willing to debate that because I think there are many people over 21 on campus.” a Ons mn Fn sr JEFF POLLOCK - Vice President ~~ KIM DOOLITTLE - Treasurer Photo by: WES TOMLINSON KATHY ARTESE - Vice President Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Photo by: WES TOMLINSON ; P|
