Er IA Vol. XXV, No. 8 April 1, 1994 Jeff Danzi Sets All-Time ‘Scoring Record at PSU Delco By Wes Tomlinson "Swish” A two-pointer from the left side of the foul circle dropped through the hoop. It was a dramatic moment for sophomore Jeff Danzi and Penn State Delco basketball. Jeff had just scored his 888th point to break an all-time scoring record at Delco. It happened at the last game of the regular season, a home game with Penn State Mt. Alto. Early in the game, everyone knew it was just a matter of time before Jeff would crack the old record of 887 set by Mark Weaver eleven years ago. Jeff's first shot bounced off the rim,; the second rolled around the rim, almost dropped in, and hopped out. Then Mt. Alto threw a bad pass which Jeff intercepted. Six dribbles later, he was in scoring position. The arching history-making shot flew up and in. The refs stopped the game. They gave Jeff the game ball. “Ladies and gentlemen, Jeff ~ Danzi has just broken our school record!” Athletic Director Tiz Griffith yelled into the mike. The crowd in the stands was on Dance Fever at Spring Fling By Meg Emhof On Saturday, April 9, Penn State Delco will hold a semi- formal dance at a Philadelphia hotel. Organizers of the “Spring Fling” have high hopes for this event. Many long hours of planning have been spent to ensure a night to remember. SGA vice president Rita Varano is expecting a good turnout. “Spring is finally here and I think everyone's ready to have fun. The dance comes at a perfect time,” Verano said. Recent Rap-Around meetings have indicated that students would appreciate a dance. Other than sports, there are few weekend activities sponsored by Penn State. The dance will provide the opportunity for students to see each other in a more formal yet still fun setting. Many are looking ahead to the dance with great anticipation. It will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Organizers originally planned to hold the dance in our campus cafeteria, but recently changed the location to the Marriott. Tickets are available in advance at $15 per person. You can get them from any member of Student Government or go to room 106 Main. The attire for the Spring Fling will be semi-formal. This leaves room for deciding exactly how formal or informal you dress. “This is a great it’s feet, cheering. Pictures were taken of the game-ball presentation. Jeff took the ball, ran up into the stands, and gave the ball to his mother. Interviewed at the half, Coach Bill Wiley said, “Jeff is a real competitor; he gives 100% in every game.” Assistant Coach Lou Tosti added, “Jeff is a real hard-nosed kid. He wants to win. He would trade his “points for a few more wins.” Dr. Tomezsko commented after the game, “I was really proud when Jeff was named ‘All County’ a couple weeks ago, and this record puts icing on the cake. He is both a good student (3.14 GPA) and a good athlete, and that's what our campus stands for.” Jeff had hit a game high of 45 points against Penn State Berks two weeks earlier. Jeff's father Tom said,” We owe a lot to 1994 CCAC Coach of “the Year Bill Wiley, and Assistant Coaches Lou Tosti and Joe Demaio.” Shortly afterwards, the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference announced that Jeff was elected to the All Conference First Team for 1994. Jeff said, “I'm going to Disney World.” opportunity to see your friends wearing something other than jeans and a T-shirt”, Varano said. Of course, you can go with a date, or show your independence by going stag. Also, you need not be a Penn State student to attend. So, if your friends are on break from other schools, bring them along. It’s a great chance to get together, meet new people, and welcome spring! By James Foltz “The Pennsylvania State University does not discriminate against any person because of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status.” The statement above can be found on much of the literature published by Penn State. It is a guideline which Penn State operates on. According to the above, Penn State will not discriminate against anyone, and this past week, it took anther step to keep it that way. On March 30 faculty and staff were invited to attend a two hour workshop, Understanding Homophobia and Heterosexism, to find out how to “work more effectively Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Campus Offers Workshop on Homophobia and Heterosexism with colleagues and students who may identify as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual” at the Penn State Delco Campus. Bonnie Ortiz, Director of Affirmative Action, and John Bell of Continuing ‘Education, will be delivering the messages at the workshop by using a videotape prepared at Rutgers by lecture and discussion. There are three primary purposes for the workshop according to Madlyn L. Hanes, Director of Academic Affairs. The first is increased awareness of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual lifestyles. The second is an expression of Penn State's commitment to disseminating information on sexuality issues. Finally, the workshop is attempting to make faculty comfortable discussing sexuality and to broaden their understanding of the issues. President's Freshman Award And Scholarship Given to Wolff By Wes Tomlinson A 4.0 grade point average (GPA) is tough to obtain for just one semester. But Penn State Delco is proud to have a sophomore who continues to have a 4.0 GPA after three semesters. Her name is Andrea Wolff, an Earth Science major. Andrea was just notified that she has won the President’s Freshman Award for achieving a 4.0 grade point average. In addition, Andrea has won a $3,000.00 scholarship from the Swarthmore Women's Club. After graduating from Cardinal O'Hara High School in 1986, Andrea studied at R.E.T.S. Electronic Schools in Broomall for a year. Then she worked for five years as an electronic technician at General Electric. When she was laid off in the summer of 1992, Andrea decided to attend Penn State. “You just can’t have a secure future today without a college education,” she said. “I plan to eventually earn a Ph.D. in geophysics,” she added. Andrea lives with her parents in Middletown Township not far from the Delco Campus. She added, “I was just an average student in high school, but now I am focused on where I want to go in life, and I decided to knuckle- down and get good grades.” Andrea plans to continue her studies next year at Penn State’s Main Campus at University Park.
