Intramurals Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Less Stress Than Varsity But Just As Much Fun! By Kim Bartles As some people on the campus may know, spring intramural sports have already started. Intramural sports are always a lot of fun because they do not involve as much pressure as playing on a varsity team. The sports are played for the love of the game and the comradery among the team members. Intramural Basketball began on February 15. The games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays, from twelve-thirty pm to one-twenty pm. Anyone can play, with teams being made up of both men and women. But they are primarily male. The Basketball Intramurals consist of eleven teams. The games are played as three on three, half court basketball. There is also a faculty and staff team, who play against the student teams. The playoffs will start on March fifteenth. Other intramural sports are starting up, as well as basketball. Intramural Volleyball began at the end of February. The Volleyball teams will have men and women on them, as will the Softball Intramurals that begin in the spring. Anyone who wants to be involved with a great part of campus life should consider Intramural Sports, especially those who have a fondness for basketball, volleyball, or softball. Those interested should bring their team’s roster to Melissa McConnel. Her office is located in room 134 in the Athletic commons. Volleyball Team Clubbed By Budgetary Cutbacks By Kim Bartles The Men’s Volleyball Club is off to a good start this season, considering it used to be a varsity team. But since Penn State stopped paying for the team’s insurance due to budgetary cutbacks, it is now a club. The captain of the Volleyball Club is Matt Clark, and the coach is Mr. Rob Sabba. The club consists of fifteen players, and it is a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Community College Association. The teams are broken into Pool A and Pool B. Pool A’s teams are from the northern part of Eastern Pennsylvania, and Pool B’s teams are from the southern part of the association. Each pool team plays each other twice. The games are played to fifteen points. The top two teams from each pool advance to the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately, there are not any home games this season for the Volleyball Club because it was not decided until late that there was going to be a club. By that time the gym was already scheduled for other sports. However, if the club does well, it may have a chance to go to three tournaments, one of which will be held at our Main Campus. Against All Odds: Delco Lady Lions Take State CCAC Championship By Kim Bartles The Lady Lions let out a mighty roar since they are the first women’s basketball team to win the Championship Game in the history of Penn State Delaware County Campus. They are the champions of the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference, or the CCAC. According to the team’s Assistant Coach, Ron Freeman, this is quite a feat for the team because, throughout the entire season, they have had only seven members. They dropped to seven from the eleven members t.he team had last season. Doris Griffith, head of the athletics department, proudly stated that the Lady Lions finished third in their league. They also hold a thirteen and five over all record. Griffith said, “The Women’s Basketball team did very well this season.” There were three main high scorers on the team this season. They are Leslie Dawson, number thirty, whose point total reached sixteen point seven. The next high scorer was number fourteen, Jackie Jackson. Jackson’s point total came to fifteen point three. Reanie Hassiepen, who is number eleven, had a point total of thirteen point one. Penn State Delaware County Campus’ Lady Lions point total came to fifty-eight point nine, while their oppositions’ came to fifty-one point five. ~ When Jackie Jackson was asked about her feelings going into the final game, she said,” The final game against Penn State Mont Alto is going to take focus, the last game (February seventeenth) was taken too lightly. It is going to be a tough game.” Mont Alto is a good team, like the Lady Lions. When asked who were the toughest teams they had to play against, Jackson said that Northampton Community College and Bucks County College were both challenging teams to play. Cece Grimes, the Head Coach, said “ The team worked real hard and I am very proud of them, they have come a long way.” She also said, “The team is very excited and are working very hard.” With all of the strikes the Lady Lions had against them this season, such as a low team membership, many injuries, and most of the team members having jobs and school work that came first before practice, it's remarkable and admirable that they over came their odds and had a terrific season. ® & 6 6 OO Oo Hours: MON.- FRI. - Spm, SAT. 10am - 4pm - 646E.
