Bux — Letters to the Editor — Continued from Page 7 there aren’t any burnt crosses on our lawn, people, doesn’t mean it’s not here. The racism on this campus occurs in class rooms, in the cafeteria, and in the lounge where racial remarks are made and laughed about. The sickening thing to me is that society has accepted racism as a norm and continues to step on the toes of Latino’s, African-Americans, Asians, and anyone else that didn’t descend from the Mayflower. Let me see the written law that says the previously listed groups are minorities, because all this time I've called these people my brothers and sisters. Another issue brought up at the meeting was the attack on the Black Student League by a student last semester, who questioned the existence of such an organization. My point is, why were we questioned? The student didn’t see it appropriate to question the existence of the Camera Club or Student Government, for that matter, only the good old “minority” club. When bringing this issue from last semester up, a comment was made that the B.S.L. blew the opportunity ~ to defend its organization and let the public know what it is about. If my calendar is correct, this is the year 1991, and African- Americans should not have to defend themselves for being African- Americans. By defending and explaining the B.S.L. , it is inadvertently admitting some form of guilt handed down by those who don’t know and don’t care to know what we are about. All my life I have been asked to explain myself . As a child growing up in all white neighbor -hoods I was asked why my hair was like it was or why I was darker than they were and what kind of name Kemba was. It’s African, it’s all African. Everything I am and will become is based on the culture of my mother country. I am a descendant of kings and queens, inventors and scholars, slaves and freemen, but you would know all this if you had asked. There are some things you can’t find in a library. To the person or persons involved in the spray painting incident , walk with me, talk with me. There’s more to being black than knowing how to rap and eat fried chicken. So, if you are not busy painting murals or using that god-given art ability elsewhere, come and see me.
