Mental, Physical Challenges by Peggie Cahall Penn State Delco houses many clubs and organizations. One aspect of Delco is the ROTC Program. What exactly is ROTC? The Reserve Officers Training Corps Program uses a “Progression Method”. The basic course introduces the national defense structure, leadership theory and land navigation. Junior and Senior year exposes one to training in advanced leadership, operations and tactics, Army administration and Military Justice. It is also to commission second lieutenants for service in the Army. The program is designed to expose one to the Army. Captain Mavracick was very enthusiastic about the ROTC program here at Delco. “We focus on organized cadet chain commands. Students plan the training. Master Sergeant Wilder and I are here to help and instruct. The students are largely responsible for the activities and programs.” Many people have misconceptions about the ROTC program. Being involved in ROTC doesn’t make you government property unless you choose to peruse a career in the Army. “Our students vary from ones with no interest in the Army to ‘Rambo types’. Our ‘Rambo’s don’t always last because it’s not what they expected,” said Mavracick. “Here we teach you the right way to do things. I think, if nothing else, ROTC will teach you about yourself.” Uniforms are required by Freshman to labs, by Sophomores to classes and to labs. “I think any one in any branch of the Armed Forces would agree that while in uniform it should be worn neatly and properly.” “If I had to describe ROTC in one word it would be ‘Challenging’ because that’s what it is. It challenges you to do things you normally wouldn’t do, challenges you mentally and physically.” answered Captain Mavracick.
